Maddow Wheels Out Neocon Nuland To Declare Russia Is Interfering In 2024 Election
MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow can’t let an election go by without wheeling out the usual cadre of tired old neocons, with the latest to appear on her show being former State Department official Victoria Nuland. As expected, she sought to lump Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and Vladimir Putin together in a segment on ‘disinformation’ this week.
“He’s at it again!” Nuland claimed of Putin, resurrecting talking points heavily featured in the prior two elections as well. She accused Musk of being in essence a useful idiot of the Kremlin, allowing Putin to use “sophisticated tools” on his X platform to ‘interfere’ and influence voters. “And he has more sophisticated tools… He’s got a brand new, very powerful tool, which is Elon Musk and X,” Nuland claimed of Putin (and by extension Trump, according to her talking points).
NEW: Victoria Nuland makes sweeping allegations about Russian election interference, implicates @elonmusk — “[Putin’s] also got a brand new, very, very powerful tool, which is Elon Musk and 𝕏.”
Nuland openly longs for the days of US Govt/Twitter 1.0 censorship collusion:
“In 2020, the social media companies worked hard with the U.S. government to try to do content moderation, to try to catch this stuff as it was happening. This time, we have Elon Musk talking directly to the Kremlin and ensuring that every time the Russians put out something, it gets five million views before anyone can catch it,” Nuland continued. And then she warned: “Trump is taking Putin lessons, as autocrats around the world are.”
Maddow, for her part, added: “For the United States to not be the leader of the free world, but rather in effectively a sort of ‘Axis’ with the dictators of Russia and China, and North Korea.” So clearly Maddow wanted to escalate the claims to put Trump in league with all dictators of the world, absurdly enough.
“For the United States to be allied with those countries instead of our traditional alliances — I’m not sure people have absorbed the magnitude of what you’re describing there,” Maddow followed with.
Aaron Maté, an indepdent journalist who has spent years debunking key Russiagate talking points, issued the following commentary in reaction to the Nuland-Maddow interview segment…
* * *
For a third consecutive presidential election, Russiagate propagandists are accusing Russia of manipulating Americans into not voting for their preferred candidate. Here, Victoria Nuland complains that Twitter is no longer partnering with the US gov’t to censor stories — what she calls the “content moderation” that we saw “in 2020.”
This is a reference to censoring journalism on Hunter Biden’s laptop based on the CIA lie that it was “Russian disinformation.”
Speaking of Russia and election interference, Nuland is well-versed in practicing it: as a senior State Dept. official, she was instrumental in funneling the Clinton-funded “Steele dossier” into the FBI. She personally authorized the early July 2016 meeting where Steele gave an FBI agent his dossier, which helped kick off the multi-year Russiagate scam.
Robert Kagan has resigned from the Washington Post editorial board after disclosure that the Washington Post would not support Kamala Harris. Here he is with his wife, Victoria, Nuland! pic.twitter.com/Zx8AnAHrjs
And another commenter wrote that “Nuland openly longs for the days of US Govt/Twitter 1.0 censorship collusion.”
“Free speech on X is under constant assault — their information monopoly has been destroyed in an election cycle — and they desperately want the Twitter 1.0 censorship regime back.”
Starbucks Warns Corporate Staff: Show Up In Office Or Get Fired
The golden era of remote work seems to be ending. Starbucks is the latest mega-corporation to enforce a return-to-office mandate for white-collar workers.
An internal message from the coffee chain obtained by Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal states a new “standardized process” will be implemented at the start of the new year to hold employees accountable if they don’t comply with work requirements, such as coming into the office at least three days a week. The memo stated that non-compliance could result in termination.
Starbucks reminded hybrid white-collar workers that working arrangements had not changed and that rules must be followed. The memo emphasized: “We are continuing to support our leaders as they hold their teams accountable.”
Bloomberg quoted new Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol last month as saying, “This is not a game of tracking. This is a game of winning,” adding, “I care about seeing everybody here succeed, and if success requires us being together more often than not, let’s be together more often.”
A company spokesperson told Bloomberg, “We are continuing to support our leaders as they hold their teams accountable to our existing hybrid work policy.”
The bigger picture here is the remote work revolution across corporate America was more or less a total flunk. It did not drive increased office productivity; instead, it was the opposite. More or less, hybrid work policies, a combination of home and office, will likely be the gold standard moving forward.
Meanwhile, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy recently told corporate staffers to work from the office five days a week, up from three days a week – completely reversing pandemic-era policies. Also, UPS, JPMorgan Chase, Dell Technologies, and Boeing have asked parts of their white-collar workforces to return to offices full-time.
We suspect Starbucks CEO Niccol’s enforcement of office work requirements is part of his attempt to turn around the sinking ship.
What until now was a solid, if not stellar earnings season, is about to go into overdrive as the tech giants report Q3 earnings, although unlike previous quarters, growth for the Magnificent 7 is expected to be far more subdued.
So turning to the first true megacap to report earnings (after a stellar print from minicap TSLA last week) Google parent Alphabet which as a reminder yesterday Goldman pointed out that ahead of earnings hedge fund positioning here was not as excessive (at 6/10), and may be why the stock is soaring some 4% after the close on what is a solid beat across the board. Here are the details :
Google Network Revenue $7.55 billion, beating estimate $7.41 billion
Google Subscriptions, Platforms and Devices Revenue $10.66 billion, beating estimate $9.79 billion
Google Services revenue $76.51 billion, beating estimate $75.24 billion
Google Cloud revenue $11.35 billion, beating estimate $10.79 billion
Other Bets revenue $388 million, beating estimate $377.9 million
Operating income $28.52 billion, estimate $26.67 billion
Google Services operating income $30.86 billion, beating estimate $28.47 billion
Google Cloud operating income $1.95 billion, beating estimate $1.11 billion
Other Bets operating loss $1.12 billion, missing estimate loss $1.16 billion
Operating margin 32%, beating estimate 31.4%
Capital expenditure $13.06 billion, beating estimates of $12.88 billion
Number of employees 181,269, down from 182,381 a year ago.
A quick point on YouTube: it was bought by Google in 2006 for $1.65 billion; YouTube now generates $1.65 billion of revenue every 17 days.
The results visually:
While Google’s cloud numbers were stellar, with revenue rising from $8.4BN to $11.3BN, and beating estimates of $10.8BN, what investors wanted to hear was more about the company’s progress on AI. This is what CEO Sundar Pichai had to say:
In Search, our new AI features are expanding what people can search for and how they search for it. In Cloud, our AI solutions are helping drive deeper product adoption with existing customers, attract new customers and win larger deals. And YouTube’s total ads and subscription revenues surpassed $50 billion over the past four quarters for the first time.
Like other Big Tech companies, Alphabet has been plowing money into developing artificial intelligence, a strategy that has helped drive demand for its cloud services, which saw revenue rise 32% in the first quarter. While Google remains a distant third in the cloud computing market, trailing Amazon and Microsoft, the company’s prowess in AI could help it close the gap.
Ironically, Google developed much of the underlying technology being used in the AI boom today, and has woven it into products from web search to its suite of enterprise software from Gmail to Google Docs. Yet ever since OpenAI’s ChatGPT was released in late 2022, Google has been battling the perception that it’s lagging behind Microsoft and OpenAI in rolling out new generative AI tools. The arrival of popular chatbots such as ChatGPT, which answers questions in a conversational tone rather than providing lists of links to other websites, has posed a threat to Google’s two-decade stranglehold on search. The company is struggling to compete in generative AI without cannibalizing its core profit machine.
Google has been scrambling to reassert its early lead in AI, after its early efforts were marred by embarrassing blunders, including a scandal over how its AI model Gemini handled race that forced the company to suspend image generation of people.
And as the company seeks to establish itself as a leader in AI, it wants to make sure that investors are rewarded to wait, and the company not only announced a cash dividend at 20 cents…
On October 29, 2024, Alphabet announced a cash dividend of $0.20 per share that will be paid on December 16, 2024, to stockholders of record as of December 9, 2024, on each of the company’s Class A, Class B, and Class C shares.
… but also announced repurchased $15.3 billion in stock under its new $70 billion buyback program.
While investors have shown they are excited about the prospects of AI, they want tech companies to continue to focus on revenue and profit in the meantime. Meta, which competes with Google in AI and also digital advertising, suffered its worst stock decline since October 2022 after reporting that it would spend billions of dollars more this year on AI efforts and projecting weaker revenue for the current quarter. For its part, Google – which does not do forecasts – paid $13.1BN in capex in the quarter, about $200 million more than estimated.
For all the hoopla about AI, search advertising remains the engine of Google’s lucrative business, and the company is facing heightened competition there, too. Meta has been seeding AI tools throughout its advertising business and Snap Inc. has also undergone a total revamp of its ad business to improve ad targeting. The digital ad market is recovering from a post-pandemic slump, buoyed by the Olympics Games this summer, but Google is increasingly vying for those ad dollars with Meta and Snap.
Additionally, if consumers gravitate from Google search to the new wave of chatbots, that could imperil the company’s search advertising juggernaut, which is expected to generate nearly $200 billion in revenue this year and the bulk of Alphabet’s profit.
Cloud has been a bright spot for Google, after it first became profitable early last year. Many young AI startups are founded by former Google employees, creating a strong pipeline of cloud clients.
For now, however, these concerns were on the backburner, with GOOGL stock jumping about 4% after hours, but still well below its all time high reached in early July when it briefly traded above $190.
For now, however, these concerns were on the backburner, with GOOGL stock exploding about 12% after hours, and trading at a new all time high.
SiriusXM’s Megyn Kelly blasted multi-millionaire Michelle Obama for making a speech that yet again complained about how racist and sexist the US is.
Obama made the speech at Kamala Harris’ rally Saturday, also bashing men in the process.
Having realized that their candidate is horrible, Michelle Obama has decided that the best strategy is to suggest that Americans are racist and sexist for not supporting Kamala Harris.
She also complained that people expect a presidential candidate to be articulate and intelligent.
Michelle Obama thinks voters are low IQ and stupid, and why should they expect Kamala to be “intelligent and articulate, and to have a clear set of policies.”
Kelly was having none of it and tore Mrs Obama to pieces.
“The Democrats were on bended knee with two dozen red roses begging Michelle Obama to run, especially when Joe Biden started to implode,” Kelly said, adding “They would have done anything to sub her in… I’m so sick and tired of Michelle Obama whining about how racist and sexist America is.”
“We made her rich, famous and beloved beyond any measure,” she urged.
“Everything she has is due to this country — her Martha’s Vineyard estate, her Chicago estate, her Washington, D.C., estate, her Hawaii estate and her trips on the David Geffen yacht. I am sick and tired of her complaining about us. It’s like Oprah. Just shut up!” the host declared.
“All of your gifts are due to us. All we want to hear you say is thank you. That’s it. That’s what we want to hear you say. Stop ripping on the country,” Kelly added.
Watch:
Kelly followed up with two more jabs.
The Dems kept the Obamas in reserve until now & their big plan now that they’re out there appears to be to shame ppl planning to vote in their own self-interest rather than to support the life choices of these yacht-loving, celeb-glomming, bored multi-millionaires. https://t.co/nKvShQCaNe
Expecting Kamala to “dazzle” us? What we want is for her to spit out two coherent sentences that reflect ANY evidence – any at all – of a deep thinking, considered, authentic person. https://t.co/l4HoPKOQ3l
She’s right, every time the likes of Michelle Obama speak, it alienates every day Americans.

Four Saboteurs, Allegedly Including An American, Killed Trying To Infiltrate Russia: Kremlin
Russia is alleging that a group of foreign military saboteurs has been killed trying to breach and attack Russian territory with Western-supplied weapons.
The country’s Federal Security Service (FSB) has presented what is calling clear evidence that the heavily armed infiltrators into Russia’s Bryansk region were foreign fighters, from nations including the United States, Canada, and Poland.
“FSB border guards, together with the units of Russia’s armed forces and the National Guard, thwarted an attempt to cross over the Russian state border in the Klimovsky district on Oct. 27,” the Russian law enforcement body stated.
It said there were four “eliminated saboteurs” who were not Ukrainian, and possessed explosive devices along with foreign equipment and weapons.
State news agencies on Monday and Tuesday widely shared footage showing a Canadian flag and a Polish-language prayer book which some of the armed men were carrying. These items were displayed next the body of one of the alleged saboteurs.
Graphic photos and footage also featured a close-up of a tattoo of angel wings on a deceased man’s arm. The FSB alleged this is evidence that he a member of the United States Army Rangers, as the tattoo featured a banner reading “Ranger” and “2d Bn”—an apparent reference to the 2nd Battalion of the US Army’s 75th Ranger Regiment.
Russian state media has circulated the following video (warning–graphic & disturbing content):
🇺🇸🇺🇦🇷🇺 US ranger attacked Russia!
The FSB released a video showing the prevention of an attempt to violate the Russian state border in the Bryansk region involving foreign saboteurs from North America.
The following is RT’s description of the footage: “In a graphic follow-up video released on Tuesday, the agency showed three half-naked, tattoo-covered bodies of alleged mercenaries lying next to an arsenal of Western-made weapons, including what appeared to be more than a dozen Swedish-made AT4 portable anti-tank missile systems, Claymore anti-personnel mines, a light machine gun, grenades and explosive packages, as well as a large stockpile of small arms ammunition.” Two large Canadian flags were also said to have been recovered.
Bryansk region has been on high alert for cross-border attacks, especially given the large Ukrainian offensive which has unfolded in neighboring Kursk since early August. This certainly isn’t the first time Russia has alleged foreign fighters from the West are embedded with Ukraine forces, but this does appear to the first instance of Western fighters being killed while trying to enter Russia.
None of these allegations have been confirmed by the US, Canada, or Poland as of yet. Typically Western governments have not commented when their citizens are captured or killed in Ukraine. France and its Foreign Legion is also believed to have a significant contingent of troops inside Ukraine. This has been a source of ratcheting tensions between Paris and Washington.
The mainstream media is having one final hysterical meltdown that is likely going to cost it the rest of its credibility with independent viewers and critical thinkers.
And the last ironic act of the Democratic-run media machine will not only be to self-immolate preaching about “saving Democracy”, but to do so in order to defend a generally unlikeable candidate that’s never won a primary.
It isn’t just fun to watch the mainstream media squirm because it indicates that the particular political party I’m voting for is making headway; it’s also because of the consequences that come with an out-of-control and panicked media.
When the media throws a massive, unhinged temper tantrum—like they did over Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally this past week—it accomplishes two things.
First, it recalibrates the media even further to the left side of the political aisle, ensuring they will lose the viewership (and likely the votes) of those further left in the center-left area of the political spectrum. Every day, the mainstream media behaves so bizarrely that it can’t help but open the eyes of many in the center-left who have otherwise already been ‘captured’ by legacy media.
Second, it simply encourages more of their viewers to switch to alternative media. There’s a reason the Donald Trump interview on Joe Rogan was the most sought-after interview of the presidential election cycle, and there’s a reason both Trump and J.D. Vance went on a podcast tour as part of their campaigns: these alternative content producers are not only where audiences are now, but where audiences are going and growing.
The journalistic liberties and exaggerations taken with rhetoric and left-wing talking points, many backed by anonymous sources, are being seen for what they are: lies.
Take, for example, this past week’s absolute obsession with comparing Donald Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally to a Nazi rally. Most of my readers know this is an unhinged comparison from the get-go — but what about that earnest independent or left-wing voter who believed the media’s narrative that it was some kind of hate-fueled fascist meetup?
Imagine their thoughts when the rally, initially cast as some kind of anti-Semitic KKK Groupon event, was followed by photos on social media showing Israeli flags:
And Jewish attendees wrapping Tefillin and praying:
I can only imagine several people were red-pilled by this, because even the most delusional left-wingers can’t ignore what is clearly in front of their eyes.
Casting aside the obvious, that Trump and his supporters are not Nazis, MSNBC seems to hardly care about the objective truth that politicians from Bill Clinton to Jimmy Carter have also spoken at rallies in Madison Square Garden.
This completely batshit insane coverage of Trump’s rally followed last week’s article in The Atlantic, the same rag that blamed you for the inflation Democrats and the Fed created, which claimed—without evidence that readers could replicate or verify on their own—that Trump privately praised Adolf Hitler’s generals.
That article came a week after another gem, called “Trump Is Speaking Like Hitler, Stalin, and Mussolini”, also from The Atlantic.
“I think it was everything that you need to know about Donald Trump in one weird, white nationalist, Nazi-type rally, and of course, there’s historic parallels to where and when this happened.”
In fact, one can almost draw a direct correlation between the positive early voting numbers for the GOP and the ramping up of Hitler and Nazi rhetoric from the left.
Here is a chart that Zero Hedge compiled, showing the number of times Trump has been mentioned alongside Hitler in stories:
New data from Bloomberg shows the story count for “Trump Hitler” in MSM jumped to a mindboggling 5,500 this week – the most massive total count in the ten years Deep State muppets in MSM have called Trump a Hitler/Nazi. This is a clear indication that Biden-Obama-Harris radicals and their billionaire funders are getting increasingly desperate.
The sensationalist lunacy spewing from the left like raw sewage from a storm drain is so blatantly out of line, it has even caused some Democrats to scold the media machine. Comedian Michael Rapaport—a Democrat who has spent the last eight years referring to Donald Trump as “pig dick”—even voiced his displeasure with the comparisons on Twitter last week.
And last week, Democrat New York City Mayor Eric Adams followed suit, publicly criticizing the media narrative when asked if he thought Trump was a fascist:
“I have had those comments hurled at me by some political leaders in the city; my answer is ‘No’. I know what Hitler has done, and I know what a fascist regime looks like. I think, as I have called for over and over again, that the level of conversation, I think we can all dial down the temperature.”
Between last term’s Russia hoax, two failed impeachments over nothing, pushing a classified document scandal that Joe Biden was also ‘guilty’ of, the cover-up of the Hunter Biden laptop story, outright lying about Joe Rogan and ivermectin, ‘fact checking’ debate moderators clearly biased toward Democrats, and this latest meltdown, the media is hemorrhaging trust from viewers and the American public at a record pace.
Why? Because it’s been so blatant. If tossing around ‘Hitler’ like it’s going out of style wasn’t convincing enough, just comparing treatment of Trump in media today versus a decade ago offers stark perspective.
As Joe Rogan pointed out to Donald Trump (cued up in the below video), many of these same media figures adored him before he entered politics. Surely, the hosts on The View didn’t think he was a racist, misogynist homophobe back when they were laughing with him, right?
And J.D. Vance proved this week, during his interview with Jake Tapper, that when confronted with the truth, the media only squirms further.
The best part? The louder they scream, the more they self-immolate.

My guess is that no matter who wins this election, the damage the mainstream media has inflicted on itself is irreversible. Two and a half years ago, in my most viewed post ever, I predicted that the mainstream media would collapse under the weight of independent media’s rise.
Since then, their ratings have been decimated, and they’ve lost even more trust. The media has done nothing to convince American citizens that it is engaged in independent reporting. Heading into this election, as they try to deal a catastrophic blow to President Trump, they’re instead only dealing it upon themselves.

Hezbollah Names New Leader, & Israel Warns “Countdown” To His Death Has Begun
Hezbollah has named a new leader, appointing Deputy Secretary-General Sheikh Naim Qassem to take over the Shia paramilitary group allied to Iran. He replaces Hassan Nasrallah as secretary-general, who was killed by heavy Israeli airstrikes in southern Beirut on September 27.
The man widely believed to have been initially ready to take the top spot, Hezbollah official Hashem Safieddine, was also killed in Israeli airstrikes earlier this month.
According to Hezbollah, Qassem has selected due to his “adherence to the principles and goals of Hezbollah,” as quoted in Al Jazeera. The Shia Muslim group said it would ask “God Almighty to guide him in this noble mission in leading Hezbollah and its Islamic resistance.”
The 71-year-old Qassem is a cleric who helped found Hezbollah in the early 1980s and he was already long dubbed Hezbollah’s number two leader.
In the wake of the pager attack which killed and wounded dozens of Hezbollah members last month, Qassem had announced, “We are quite ready, if the Israelis want a ground incursion, the resistance forces are ready for that.”
He had also called out and condemned the United States as “a partner with Israel, through unlimited military support – culturally, politically, financially” – vowing ultimately “We will win, just as we won in our confrontation with Israel in 2006.” According to a review of his background:
Qassem, Hezbollah’s new leader, was born in 1953 in southern Lebanon. He served as a Shiite cleric and educator until the late 1970s, when he joined the Amal terror group and political party during the Lebanese civil war.
When a number of Amal members split from the party to found Hezbollah in 1982, Qassem followed and was appointed deputy leader in 1991 under founding leader Abbas al-Musawi, who was killed by an Israeli helicopter attack the following year.
Qassem remained in his role when Nasrallah became leader in 1992, and served as his deputy until Nasrallah’s death.
He was clearly already the group’s leading spokesman at this point, but most view him as lacking the strong presence and charisma of Nasrallah.
Last month’s Israeli pager attack was the start of a series major setbacks and losses for Hezbollah in rapid succession. Hezbollah had been penetrated by Israeli intelligence, and its leadership and command structure somewhat thrown into disarray.
Muhammad Ali praying behind Hezbollah Secretary General Sheikh Naim Qassem in Beirut 1985 pic.twitter.com/orLqL7Nkwj
However, the Lebanese group – which actually has seats in parliament – has sought to present to the world and its allis in Iran, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen that its structure has been rapidly reconstituted. It has unleashed dozens or sometimes hundreds of rockets on northern Israel per day, and claims to have halted the advance of the Israeli ground offensive into southern Lebanon.
Israel is meanwhile already threatening to take out the newly appointed Hezbollah leader. Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on Tuesday said of the election of Naim Qassem as Hezbollah chief that “the appointment is temporary and the countdown has begun” – which marks an obvious death threat.
The media continues to make absurd assertions against Donald Trump in a desperate effort to derail his campaign just a week out from the election. The latest came via Whoopi Goldberg on The View who claimed that Trump plans to break up interracial married couples and deport the person who is not white.
Not only that, but Golderberg also claimed that Trump would then “put the white guy with someone else.”
It’s completely absurd claim that resides only in her warped reality.
“He’s not gonna be — he’s not gonna say, ‘Oh, you’re with a white guy, I’m gonna keep you from being deported,’” Goldberg blurted.
“No, he’s gonna deport you and put the white guy with someone else,” she ridiculously asserted.
“The man is out there!” she screamed wide eyed.
Whoopi now says Trump is going to break up interracial marriages…
As if that wasn’t enough batshit crazy, The View then wheeled out “Morning Joe” host Mika Brzezinski who literally started crying and saying all Trump supporters are Nazis.
“These are the final hours,” she warned, adding “I come with such dire warnings, and I mean them from the bottom of my heart!” asserting that we are witnessing the “descent into fascism.”
Brzezinski sheiks that if Americans elect Trump again, it will our “descent into fascism” and “normalization” of it.
“I come with such dire warnings, and I mean them from the bottom of my heart!” she insisted pic.twitter.com/FO5hiPgAxD
There sure were a lot of jewish, brown, black, and latino Nazis at that rally.

Ballot Drop-Boxes Torched In Portland, Vancouver – Could Affect Tightest US House Race
As pre-election passions intensify down the stretch to Election Day, two ballot drop-boxes in the adjacent cities of Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington were torched with incendiary devices on Monday morning, incinerating hundreds of ballots and potentially affecting the outcome of one of the tightest US House races in the country. “I strongly denounce any acts of terror that aim to disrupt lawful and fair elections in Washington state,” said Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs in a statement.
The box in Portland fared better by far: Thanks to the successful activation of its internal fire-suppression system, only three ballots were damaged. However, in Vancouver, hundreds of ballots were fully destroyed as that box’s anti-arson technology failed. Both boxes had systems designed to release a flame-suppressing powder when a certain temperature in the box is detected. The Vancouver box had last been emptied at 8:00 am on Sunday.
Someone dropped a match into a “drop box” in Clark County this morning…
Hundreds of ballots destroyed.
I was told that dropping votes inside an unattended box on the street was a good idea.
No way to tell what votes were burned or who they even belonged to. Absolute insanity. pic.twitter.com/QIa7aIQYlu
The Portland box was attacked at 3:30 am and the Vancouver box at 4:00 am. Portland police released photos of a Volvo S-60 they think was involved in both incidents. They place the model year between 2001 and 2004. The sedan didn’t have a front license plate, and cops weren’t able to read the rear tag. Investigators suspect Monday’s twin attacks are related to an earlier incident on Oct. 8 in Vancouver, in which a box was found aflame with some type of device lying next to it. Apparently, no ballots were harmed that time.
Vancouver sits inside Washington’s 3rd Congressional District, home to what’s widely viewed as the country’s tightest House race. In 2022, Democratic Marie Gluesenkamp Perez beat Republican former Green Beret and CIA field agent Joe Kent by just 2,629 votes out of nearly 320,000 votes cast. This year’s race is a rematch, and Gluesenkamp Perez is considered the House Democrat at greatest risk of being ousted. In an addition signal of Gluesenkamp Perez’s peril, Trump won the district in both 2016 and 2020.
Considering Democrats account for 54% of mail-in ballots requested in Washington — versus Republicans requesting 36% of total requests — any attack on a drop-box would generally seem likely to benefit Republicans, particularly when those boxes are in urban areas that skew even more Democratic.
“We don’t know the motives behind these acts — sounds like a series of three at this point — but we do know that acts like this are targeted and intentional,” Portland Police Bureau Assistant Chief Amanda McMillan told reporters Monday. (Brilliant thinking, Sherlock!) “We are concerned about that intentional act trying to affect the election process.”
Clark County Washington auditor Greg Kimsey encouraged people who’d dropped ballots in the box after 11 am Saturday to call his office and request a new ballot. He said his department will increase ballot-pickup frequency, switch to evening collection, and hire monitors to provide 24-hour supervision of the boxes. He foolishly disclosed that the monitors will be ordered not to confront arsonists, and to instead merely call 911 if they see something suspicious — maybelike flames and smoke pouring out of the box?
