FBI Agents Board Sister-Ship Of Dali Involved In Baltimore Bridge Disaster

FBI Agents Board Sister-Ship Of Dali Involved In Baltimore Bridge Disaster

Early Saturday morning, Washington Post journalists observed FBI agents boarding the massive container ship Maersk Saltoro at a marine terminal in Baltimore City. The vessel is managed by the same parent company as the Dali, which toppled the Francis Scott Key Bridge earlier this year. The journalists described the FBI operation as a “court-authorized law enforcement activity.”

Statements from the US attorney’s office said the FBI agents conducted “court-authorized law enforcement activity” on the Maersk Saltoro alongside officials from the Coast Guard’s Investigative Services and the Environmental Protection Agency’s Criminal Investigation Division. There were no further details about what the agents were searching for.

This comes just days after the Justice Department slapped Dali’s owner, Grace Ocean Private Limited, and operator, Synergy Marine Pte Ltd., with a $100 million new civil claim over salvage efforts to clear the critical waterway and reopen the harbor after the Dali paralyzed the port by toppling the bridge in late March.

In the new civil claim, the Justice Department said, “This tragedy was entirely avoidable. The electrical and mechanical systems on the DALI were improperly maintained and configured in a way that violated safety regulations and norms for international shipping. These problems precipitated a power loss and then a cascading series of failures that culminated in the collision.”

The complaint continued, “As events unfolded, and because of the unseaworthy condition of the ship, none of the four means available to help control the DALI—her propeller, rudder, anchor, or bow thruster—worked when they were needed to avert or even mitigate this disaster. Mechanical and electrical systems on the massive container ship had been ‘jerry-rigged’ and improperly maintained, culminating in a horrific power outage moments before it crashed into a support column on the Francis Scott Key Bridge in March. Six construction workers were killed when the bridge plunged into the water.”

We all remember this dramatic video.

Although it’s unclear what the FBI agents were searching for this morning, we’ve previously highlighted that federal authorities should begin vetting the crews of foreign vessels navigating US waterways. This alone represents a serious national security threat.

The Pittsburgh Paradox Could Hand PA To Trump

0
The Pittsburgh Paradox Could Hand PA To Trump

Authored by Oliver Bateman via RealClearPolitics,

Pittsburgh’s transformation from Rust Belt phoenix to progressive tech stronghold was supposed to be the Democrats’ long-term ace in the hole for Pennsylvania. Instead, hubris might just hand the Keystone State to the GOP in 2024. As Allegheny County limps toward another election cycle, Republicans are eyeing an opportunity born not of their own strength, but of Democratic complacency and voter disillusionment.

The numbers paint a grim picture. Allegheny County hemorrhaged nearly 7,800 residents last year alone, placing it in the top 10 for population loss nationwide. Even more alarming, the county has shed 50,000 jobs in the past five years – five times more than any other Pennsylvania county. The county’s most impoverished suburbs, home to many recent immigrants and other non-white minorities, are facing another round of white flight. On top of that, the future looks even bleaker for those officials tasked with educating future generations of gainfully-employed citizens: Pittsburgh Public Schools are mulling the closure of 16 schools, a move that would disproportionately impact working-class neighborhoods.

Yet you’d never know any of this listening to the county’s Democratic leadership. Take newly-minted County Executive Sara Innamorato. In 2018, she rode a wave of Democratic Socialists of America-fueled primary upsets to unseat center-left incumbent Dom Costa in the state legislature, infamously referring to the working-class voters she grew up with as “racist” along the way. By 2019, she’d ditched the DSA affiliation and made some concessions to organized labor, like many other young Democrats, but kept some of the progressive bona fides. Her narrow victory over well-funded Republican Joe Rockey in the county executive race in 2023 should have been a wake-up call. Instead, it seems to have lulled local Democrats into a false sense of security.

To understand where Allegheny County might be headed, one need only look south to Washington County. Once a union-labor stronghold for the Democrats, Washington County has rapidly become a petri dish for MAGA politics. In 2020, Trump won 61% of the vote there. But it’s not just about presidential politics. MAGA true believers have capitalized on low turnouts to seize control of local government, turning once-staid county commission meetings into wild shouting matches.

The rapid transformation of Washington County offers a playbook for how the GOP might chip away at Democratic dominance in Allegheny County. It hinged on voter apathy – depressing moderate-voter turnout, particularly those who saw Washington County’s Democratic machine as irreparably gridlocked and hopelessly corrupt, while galvanizing the MAGA base in both the primary and general elections.

The Pennsylvania Department of State reports that Democrats now hold their slimmest voter registration advantage in decades. Republicans, meanwhile, have added nearly 40,000 voters since 2020. In Washington County, this wild shift has greatly increased the temperature and radicalized the tone of local politics. Allegheny County isn’t there yet, but the currents are detectable.

Consider the recent school closure debacle in Pittsburgh. Nothing saps voter enthusiasm quite like the news that your neighborhood school will shutter – with almost zero possibility for a better outcome, given the demographic catastrophe, further exacerbated by two years of unwelcome COVID closures, now facing the system. For every progressive cheering the city’s blue recycle bins and ban on plastic bags, there’s an inflation-wracked working-class family wondering if they have a future in the city their grandparents built.

Or take the job losses. Pittsburgh’s much-vaunted “eds-and-meds” economy was supposed to be recession-proof. Now, even healthcare giant UPMC is tightening its belt. The promised tech boom, meanwhile, has largely benefited a small, highly-educated elite – mostly carpetbaggers happy to inflate property values in the city’s nicer areas and pleased by superficial progressive reforms – while leaving blue-collar workers behind.

Republicans don’t need to win these disaffected voters outright, especially in the city, since the county’s white flight-inflated suburbs have long ago been home to legions of right-leaning voters eager to paint the city in the worst possible light. To prevail, the GOP just needs undecided working-class voters to stay home on Election Day. And given the state of things, who could blame them?

The irony is that Pittsburgh’s current malaise is, in many ways, a product of its own success. The “Pittsburgh Renaissance” of the early 2000s drew all those carpetbagger yuppies and tech companies. Now, the very leaders who built their electoral brands and government pensions during this transformation are shocked to discover that a city can’t run on artisanal coffee shops and co-working spaces alone.

For Republicans, this presents a golden opportunity. While they’re unlikely to ever again seize control of Pittsburgh proper, they can use the city’s leftward drift as a boogeyman to drive turnout in the suburbs and rural areas. Every time a Pittsburgh politician has talked about defunding the police, shutting down a polluting smokestack, implementing a Green New Deal, or – as with Innamorato – the racism of white working-class voters, that’s fodder for GOP advertisements outside the city limits.

Democrats, for their part, seem aware of the danger – the takeover of Washington County received lots of local and national coverage, after all – but have few levers to pull to release all this built-up pressure. They’re so used to winning Allegheny County that they have no reason to make the concessions and cut the deals needed to win coin-flip elections.

The result, alas, is a political monoculture that stifles debate outside of niche primaries dominated by left-leaning activists and rewards ideological conformity over practical problem-solving. To give but one example, instead of a robust public debate about how to right-size the failing Pittsburgh public schools while ensuring equitable education, we get vague promises and finger-pointing. It’s the kind of thorny, politically fraught issue that single-party rule seems especially ill-equipped to handle.

Just judging from the numerous candidate visits and Kamala Harris’ pro-fracking forgiveness tour, it’s clear that all eyes are fixed on the region. For it’s here, in the shadow of abandoned mills turned into malls and shuttered churches retrofitted into breweries, that America’s political future may well be decided. Can its Democratic elite forge a center-left political identity that bridges the gap between its progressive pretensions and its working-class roots?  Can these leaders avoid becoming the weakest link in the Democrats’ electoral chain? The anvil of Western Pennsylvania, once used to shape the nation’s infrastructure, may yet forge an unexpected political realignment that reshapes the nation itself.

“No Americans”: Insider Of Alleged Trafficking Network Reveals How Migrants Ended Up At Charleroi, PA Factory

“No Americans”: Insider Of Alleged Trafficking Network Reveals How Migrants Ended Up At Charleroi, PA Factory

The story in Springfield, Ohio, and Charleroi, Pennsylvania, should not be about goat sacrifices and migrants eating cats and dogs. It’s more sinister than that. It’s about a much darker reality of an alleged large-scale human trafficking and labor exploitation network operated by mysterious staffing companies with dozens and dozens of passenger vans in what some have called “modern-day slavery.” These migrants are shuttled around to factories, displacing native-born workers.

Let’s start with a chronological recap of our coverage of Charleroi, which began just over a week ago (before Trump even mentioned the tiny manufacturing town).

Since then, the developments have been nothing short of explosive:

The new think tank America 2100 has been leading the effort behind the coverage of Charleroi, a town swamped by Haitians in just a short few years through what appears to be a shady State Department program called ‘Temporary Protected Status.’

After the migrants are dumped into the US, there appears to be very little domestic oversight by the federal government, as these migrants are then possibly exploited and allegedly trafficked by staffing companies who skim off their wages.

Only three hours away in Springfield…

… ex-Wall Street Journal reporter Asra Nomani uncovered an alleged migrant trafficking empire…

In Charleroi, staffing companies run a complex network of nondescript vans that shuttle the migrants to and from their homes to a food packaging plant (Fourth Street Foods) in town.

Shorter version.

In recent years, the head of one staffing company that controlled about “500 temporary workers [migrants] to a Charleroi-based meat packer” [Fourth Street Foods] hired a hitman to kill a human resources employee at the meat packing plant for alleged sabotage.

Via local paper Trib Live…

Peeling off the layers in Charleroi, which already sounds like it could be an epic thriller series on Netflix, America 2100 interviewed an ex-insider at one staffing agency that explained parts of the migrant trafficking scheme:

“Charleroi, PA has been overwhelmed by Haitian immigrants. Until now, nobody knew how they got here. Rick tells us he worked for the company importing the immigrants. He says they were hiring them illegally. “They didn’t want no Americans, cuz they would have had to pay more.”

Responding to America 2100, X user and resident of the town Andrew Armbruster, provided a whole lot of further insight into the staffing companies:

Armbruster even cited data that suggests the Haitians replacing native-born workers at the factories is part of the grand scheme dubbed ‘great replacement’ … Also, these migrants will likely become future Democratic voters.

Bingo.

“Kamala’s government works with NGOs who work with local corporations to carry out migrant takeovers of towns. That’s how a small hamlet can become a refugee camp overnight. American citizens are dispossessed of the only home they’ve ever known. Is there a bigger scandal?” former Trump White House adviser Stephen Miller wrote on X.

There’s a very real possibility this alleged migrant trafficking network is happening nationwide.

This is not ‘America First’ when the town of Charleroi has newly minted Western Union locations in mini-marts where the migrants are sending their monies overseas. The town is being mine stripped by foreign labor, displacing native-born workers because of affordability concerns, crime, and the chaos of importing the third world to the first world.

This is not America First – this is globalist open border corporate profits first.

The Odds Of An Electoral College Tie Are About To Soar, Who Would Win?

0
The Odds Of An Electoral College Tie Are About To Soar, Who Would Win?

Authored by Mike Shedlock via MishTalk.com,

In case of a tie, the House of Representatives would decide. This favors Trump. But what are the odds? I make a guess…

The above map is not contrived or convoluted. It is the current state of affairs except for Nebraska and a small lead for Harris in Nevada, reversed in the above map. However….

Please note Republicans Push to Change Nebraska’s Electoral System

Nebraska Republicans are pushing for the state to change its electoral vote process to a winner-take-all system, which could give former President Donald Trump an extra electoral vote in this year’s close presidential race.

Nebraska’s all-Republican congressional delegation sent a letter to Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen (R) and Speaker of the Legislature John Arch (R) asking them to pass and sign a bill that would make this change.

How does Nebraska’s electoral system work?

Currently, Nebraska is one of the only states in the country that doesn’t award all of its electoral votes to the presidential candidate who received the most votes statewide, which is a winner-take-all system. Instead, they split up their votes by congressional district.

The state has five electoral votes, a small fraction of the Electoral College — made up of 270 votes.

Nebraska has three congressional districts, and if a presidential candidate wins a district, they get a single electoral vote. If they win all three districts, they get three electoral votes. The state’s two remaining electoral votes go to the person who received the most votes statewide. This system has led to Nebraska splitting its Electoral College votes in the past.

In 2020, President Joe Biden lost to Trump in Nebraska statewide and in the mostly Republican districts, but he defeated him in the state’s 2nd congressional district, which includes Omaha — the state’s largest city. So, Trump garnered four electoral votes and Biden netted one. [Mish Comment: Polls show Harris is ahead in Omaha. Biden carried the district by 7 points.]

“As Governor of Nebraska, I will never waver in my commitment to do what is right for our state,” Pillen said. “As I have consistently made clear, I strongly support statewide unity and joining 48 other states by awarding all five of our electoral college votes to the presidential candidate who wins the majority of Nebraskans’ votes.”

However, he said he would only do this if he knew that 33 senators would vote for it. Nebraska has a unicameral legislature — meaning they only have one chamber in their legislature instead of two. The legislature is made up of 49 senators, so Pillen is asking for over two-thirds of the members to clearly and publicly express support for this.

Around 30 to 31 votes have been confirmed, the legislators said.

Time Expires in Maine

Maine, which operates on the same system, have threatened to do the same.

However, time has expired for Maine to make the change.

If Nebraska acts, Trump wins on 269 but Harris would need 270.

Advantage Trump

Breaking an Electoral College Tie

In the House, each state delegation (not representative) would get one vote, with the presidency going to whoever wins a majority of state delegations.

Republicans currently control 26 of the 50 House delegations.

Regardless of who controls the House next year, Republicans are a strong favorite to remain in control of 26 House delegations.

This Has Happened Before

The Center for Politics discusses Breaking an Electoral College Tie

The presidential election of 1824 was the first one in which there is a tabulation of the actual popular vote for president, albeit not from every state. A majority of states in the Union at the time had adopted a popular vote for presidential electors; previously, presidential electors had generally been chosen by state legislatures. Thus, one can describe 2024 as representing the 200th anniversary of a popular vote for president, even if the totals represented only 18 of the 24 states voting at the time. (This history is from What Hath God Wrought: The Transformation of America, 1815-1848 by Daniel Walker Howe).

The 4-way presidential race failed to produce a majority winner in the Electoral College: Andrew Jackson finished first, with 41% of the popular vote and 38% of the electoral votes, short of the majority required for election. The election went to the House of Representatives, which brings us to the second bicentennial anniversary in 2024: 1824 was the most recent election in which the House decided the presidential winner. The 12th Amendment stipulates that in the event no one wins a majority of the Electoral College votes, the House chooses among the top 3 finishers in the Electoral College, with each state’s delegation getting a single vote. The House ended up backing the second-place finisher, John Quincy Adams. Jackson would get his revenge in a landslide victory 4 years later.

What Are the Odds?

Nate Silver and others have concocted bizarre scenarios to arrive at 269-269 math. The above map is not bizarre. It is currently one of the most likely scenarios.

Most likely scenario does not mean probable. There are thousands of scenarios, most of which are near-zero probability outcomes (for example Trump or Harris winning every state).

Nate Silver has Harris’ odds of winning Pennsylvania at 53.7%, Michigan at 61.8%, Wisconsin at 55.4%, and Trump winning Nevada at 47.4%.

If we assume every other state is as projected, the odds of 269-269 tie are 0.537 * 0.618 * 0.554 * 0.474 = 0.0871.

That would be an 8.7 percent chance. But It is not quite that simple because the other states are not guaranteed, reducing the odds.

Keep the above assumptions but factor in Arizona with Trump’s odds of winning at 64.5 percent and the tie odds drop to 5.7 percent. Also factor in Georgia the odds drop to 3.51 percent. And finally, factor in North Carolina and the odds drop further to about 2.3 percent.

But a correlation factor increases the odds depending on what assumptions we make. For example, if we assume Harris wins Wisconsin, her odds of winning Michigan and Pennsylvania rise because the states are similar in voting patterns.

Nate Silver has the deadlock odds at 0.3 percent.

Look for Silver’s odds of a tie to jump 8-fold or more. My crude calculation suggests the odds are between 2 and 3 percent but this can easily rise (or fall) over time.

Watch: 50 Kids Loot 7-Eleven In Beverly Hills For Candy & Snacks

Watch: 50 Kids Loot 7-Eleven In Beverly Hills For Candy & Snacks

Lunatic progressives who transformed parts of California into lawless hellholes insist their ‘utopian’ state should be a model for the rest of America. Thanks, but no thanks.

On Friday evening, a mob of 50 kids ransacked a 7-Eleven in Los Angeles, more specifically, on the border of Beverly Hills at 8500 W Olympic Blvd, local media outlet KTLA reported.

“The videos show some of the juveniles covering their faces with hoods and masks as they run in and out of the store, and others are seen laughing as they run back to their bikes with stolen goods,” KTLA said.

Dramatic footage posted on X shows kids looting the store for snacks and candy.

The rampant lawlessness in VP Harris’ home state is a direct result of far-left progressives pushing disastrous criminal and social justice reforms that have only backfired. At this point, one has to wonder if the chaos is deliberate.

Microsoft-Owned LinkedIn Using People’s Data To Train Artificial Intelligence Models

Microsoft-Owned LinkedIn Using People’s Data To Train Artificial Intelligence Models

Authored by Katabella Roberts via The Epoch Times (emphasis ours),

Professional networking platform LinkedIn has confirmed that it automatically uses personal user data to train artificial intelligence (AI) models without first informing its members.

The LinkedIn app displayed on a phone in London on Jan. 11, 2021. Edward Smith/Getty Images

The California-headquartered company said in a Sept. 18 blog post that it has updated the privacy policy element of its terms of service to include language clarifying how it uses the information shared with it “to develop the products and services of LinkedIn and its affiliates, including by training AI models used for content generation (‘generative AI’) and through security and safety measures.”

The platform said that there is an opt-out setting for members when it comes to using their data for generative AI training.

LinkedIn is owned by Microsoft, which has invested heavily in OpenAI, the developer behind ChatGPT. According to the FAQ section of the platform’s website, the AI models used to power generative AI features may be trained by LinkedIn or another provider, such as Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI service.

The networking site said it uses generative AI for features such as its writing assistant and for suggesting posts or messages.

Personal data such as user posts, usage information, inputs and resulting outputs, language preferences, and any feedback they may provide is among the data processed and used to train AI, LinkedIn said.

When LinkedIn trains generative AI models, it seeks to “minimize personal data in the data sets” used to train them, including by using privacy-enhancing technologies that redact or remove personal data from the training dataset, the company said.

LinkedIn said the updates to its terms of service will go into effect on Nov. 20.

LinkedIn added that it does not currently train content-generating AI models on data from members located in the European Union, European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

“If you live in these regions, we and our affiliates will not use your personal data or content on LinkedIn to train or fine-tune generative AI models for content creation without further notice,” the company said.

Opting Out

LinkedIn users in other locations who wish to opt out of allowing the platform to use their data for AI training can visit the “data for generative AI improvement” member setting and set it to “off.”

According to LinkedIn, opting out means that the platform and its affiliates “won’t use your personal data or content on LinkedIn to train models going forward, but does not affect training that has already taken place.”

Meanwhile, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, announced earlier this month that it will resume training AI models using public content shared by adults on Facebook and Instagram in the UK over the coming months.

That announcement was made after the company paused training to address “regulatory feedback.”

Meta said it will use public information including posts, photos, captions, and comments from accounts of users over the age of 18 to train and improve its generative AI models. It said the content will not include private messages.

Meta said that users in the UK will soon receive in-app notifications regarding AI training, along with information on how they can access a form to object to their data being used to train generative AI models.

Privacy rights groups have criticized social media platforms for processing users’ data without their consent and have urged the Information Commissioner’s Office, the UK’s data protection watchdog, to take action.

In a statement, Mariano delli Santi, the legal and policy officer at the UK-based Open Rights Group, said LinkedIn is the latest social media company found to be processing user data without first asking for consent.

“The opt-out model proves once again to be wholly inadequate to protect our rights: the public cannot be expected to monitor and chase every single online company that decides to use our data to train AI,” he said.

The Epoch Times contacted a LinkedIn spokesperson for further comment but didn’t receive a reply by publication time.

IDF Says 180 Targets Eliminated In Southern Lebanon; US Lauds ‘Good Outcome’ Of Beirut Strike

IDF Says 180 Targets Eliminated In Southern Lebanon; US Lauds ‘Good Outcome’ Of Beirut Strike

Since Thursday and the deadly chaos of the two-day pager explosion attack, southern Lebanon has seen the most intense exchange of fire between Hezbollah and Israel since the conflict began after Oct.7.

On Saturday the expanded pace of fire has continued, with Hezbollah having launched at least 90 rockets on northern Israel, and the IDF saying it has mounted at least 80 raids on weapons installations belonging to Hezbollah.

Funerals for victims of pager attacks, via AP

The Israeli army described that it “dismantled approximately 180 targets and thousands of launcher barrels” in southern Lebanon over several hours of Saturday.

But it also confirmed that “approximately 90 projectile launches were identified crossing from Lebanon into Israeli territory.” The IDF added: “The [Israeli military] will continue operating to dismantle and degrade Hezbollah’s capabilities and terror infrastructure.”

There are currently many warnings from both sides of the border that this marks a slide into all-out war, which both have avoided thus far, with the past year witnessing ‘limited’ and often short-lived attacks and rocket volleys.

The death toll from Friday’s Israeli airstrike which killed Hezbollah special forces commander Ibrahim Aqil has risen to 37, after a day-long rescue operation and workers picking through rubble of a residential building, according to the country’s Health Ministry. Reports say that a meeting of Hezbollah leaders was taking place in either a garage, or a tunnel underneath the building in south Beirut.

“According to source, the meeting was being held in a tunnel under a residential building, a location that was being used for the first time, which has raised Hezbollah’s concerns about the extent Israel has infiltrated its ranks,” Middle East Eye reports.

Lebanon’s government says three children and seven women were among the victims. Over 60 others were injured. The White House has still called the Israeli strike “a good outcome”.

White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan described Aqil as having “American blood on his hands and has a rewards for justice price on his head.”

He has long been sought by the US for his alleged role in the 1983 bombing of the US Embassy in Beirut, and well as kidnapping of Westerners in the the later 1980s. He had a $7 million bounty on his head issued by the Justice Department.

Screenshot: Al Jazeera coverage of Friday’s deadly Beirut strike.

“He is somebody who the United States promised long ago we would do everything we could to see brought to justice,” Sullivan said. “You know, 1983 seems like a long time ago,” he added. “But for a lot of families and a lot of people, they’re still living with it every day.”

Some Middle East pundits and commentators expressed “shock” at the celebratory statements by the Biden administration, given the Israeli operation resulted in a high civilian death toll.

Israel has claimed that Hezbollah was using those in the residential building above as ‘human shields’.

The Silent Insurrection: General Milley’s Hand On January 6

0
The Silent Insurrection: General Milley’s Hand On January 6

Authored by Haley McLean via Deaclassified with Julie Kelly,

In the days and weeks leading up to January 6, the nation’s highest-ranking military officer, then-Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley, was moving in lockstep with the political anxieties of top Democratic leaders.

These Democrats grew anxious as over 140 House Republicans planned to contest the election results during the electoral college certification that day. Milley was then deeply engaged with a circle of confidants including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, former Obama National Security Advisor Susan Rice, and former Defense Secretary Robert Gates, among others—all of whom shared a unified disdain for President Donald Trump.

At a House Oversight Committee hearing in April addressing the 3-hour and 19-minute delay in mobilizing the D.C. National Guard on January 6, Colonel Earl Matthews, one of four Department of Defense witnesses, testified about an “irrational” fear among a “clique” of senior military officers concerning the potential misuse of the National Guard by the president. He indicated that these concerns were influenced behind the scenes by Milley, who often made disparaging remarks about the president and regularly referred to his fear of a so-called potential “Reichstag moment.”

Meanwhile, Milley has insisted he maintained a posture of strict neutrality, vocally distancing his leadership of the military from the political turmoil surrounding the 2020 presidential election. “My job is to stay clean by ensuring that the uniformed military remains out of domestic politics,” Milley stated during his testimony before the January 6 Select Committee. “The United States military has no role in domestic politics, period, full stop.”

Nevertheless, accounts of Milley’s approach to the unfolding situation during the late days of the Trump administration, as detailed in Carol Leonnig and Philip Rucker’s I Alone Can Fix It and Susan Glasser and Peter Baker’s August 2022 report in The New Yorker, present a picture of Milley that is much different from the disinterested persona he has disingenuously cultivated.

Some excerpts follow:

  • Considering resigning in the summer of 2020 during the height of the George Floyd riots, Milley ultimately decided against it. “Fuck that shit,” he told his staff, “I’ll just fight him.” Despite assurances to confidants that he would never openly defy the president—a move he considered illegal—he was “determined to plant flags.” Milley envisioned a scenario involving either a declaration of martial law or a presidential invocation of the Insurrection Act with “Trumpian Brown Shirts fomenting violence.”

  • Embodying a self-styled narrative of heroic defiance, Milley was prepared to face severe consequences to counter what he perceived as a grave threat. “If they want to court-martial me or put me in prison, have at it,” Milley told his staff, “but I will fight from the inside.”

  • Milley saw himself as “tasked” with safeguarding “against Trump and his people” from potentially misusing the military, something he confided in a “trusted confidant” to ensure he remained true to this plan. “I have four tasks from now until the twentieth of January,” he affirmed, “and I’m going to accomplish my mission.”

Milley’s Cohort of Confidants

I Alone Can Fix It highlights how Milley, as the joint session approached and more than 140 House Republicans were pledged to contest the election results, shared his anxiety with “senior leaders” in Congress who sought his “comfort” amid fears of “attempted coups.” The New Yorker’s August 2022 report further reveals Milley’s communications with key Democrats, specifically Pelosi and Schumer.

Additionally, the New Yorker report describes Milley’s continued outreach to “Democrats close to Biden,” which included “regular” interactions with Susan Rice, former Obama national security advisor. Known for her role in helping to orchestrate the Trump-Russia collusion hoax, Rice’s expertise in activities aimed at undermining the former president raises this question: What was it about her that made Milley want to seek her guidance in the days leading up to January 6?

The report also references Robert Gates, former Secretary of Defense during both the Obama and Bush administrations, as another key figure in Milley’s circle of confidants. Gates reportedly advised Milley to remain in the Pentagon as long as possible, citing President Trump’s “increasingly erratic and dangerous behavior.” I Alone Can Fix It also depicts Gates as a mentor to Milley, urging him not to resign during the final months of the Trump administration. He’s quoted advising Milley, “Don’t quit. Steel your back. It’s not going to be easy, but you’re the right guy in the right place and at the right time.”

Liz Cheney and Milley’s “Nightmare Scenarios”

During Trump’s final months in office, the New Yorker report notes that Milley had two “nightmare scenarios” running through his mind: One was that Trump might spark an external crisis, such as a war with Iran, to divert attention or to create a pretext for a power grab at home, and the other was that Trump would manufacture a domestic crisis to justify ordering the military into the streets to prevent the transfer of power.

On December 26, 2020, the two “nightmare scenarios” then preoccupying Milley transitioned from his personal concerns to the public domain in a column by Washington Post reporter David Ignatius—a journalist with close ties to both (you guessed it) the Obama and Bush administrations.

Ignatius’s extensive connections within these administrations are detailed in a March 2012 Politico report, which highlights his significant access to senior White House and Pentagon officials, including being tapped by the Obama White House for exclusive access to the Bin Laden documents in 2012. Additionally, former Vice President Dick Cheney mentioned Ignatius in his 2011 memoir, In My Time, co-authored with his daughter, former House Republican Liz Cheney. In the memoir, Cheney recounts concerns about leaks to the press during the Bush administration and reveals that a source had spoken to Ignatius at the president’s instruction.

Coincidentally, in her 2023 memoir, Oath and Honor, Liz Cheney also references Ignatius’s December 26, 2020, Washington Post column that unveiled the “nightmare scenarios” Milley had envisioned. That evening, she notes, the column “caught my attention” as Ignatius, “a longtime journalist well-sourced at the Pentagon, reported that senior government officials feared Trump was ‘threatening to overstep the constitutional limits of his power.’” Cheney cites her discovery of Milley’s concerns in this article as the catalyst to her mobilization of all 10 living former Secretaries of Defense to sign a letter warning the current Defense Department leadership and President Trump to stay within bounds. Additionally, she reveals that when Robert Gates, a mentor to Milley, was approached to join this effort, he responded, “If Cheney’s on, I’m on.”

I Alone Can Fix It reports that on the evening of January 2, 2021, Milley was “tipped off” by a “former defense secretary” about an impending Washington Post opinion piece authored by those same 10 living former defense secretaries Liz Cheney mobilized for the purpose on the basis of Milley’s “nightmare scenario” fears. The book also notes that on January 7, 2021—the day after the chaotic events of January 6—Cheney called Milley to check in. “How are you doing?” he asked her. “That fucking guy Jim Jordan. That son of a bitch,” Cheney responded. What more might we learn about Milley’s interactions with Cheney in the days leading up to January 6? Surely, this was not their first conversation about the events that would ultimately unfold that day.

The January 6 Committee’s “Investigation”

In the months following January 6, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who previously had received assurances from Milley that he would not use the military for domestic purposes politically favorable to Trump, established the Select Committee on January 6 to “investigate” the day’s events. Remarkably, Liz Cheney was appointed vice chair of the panel, a position typically reserved for a member of the majority party.

According to a November 2022 Washington Post report, Cheney exerted a “remarkable level” of control over much of the committee’s work. Staffers, frustrated with Cheney’s insistence on centering the final report on President Trump, expressed concerns that important findings unrelated to Trump would be withheld from the public.

Consistent with Cheney’s objectives for the committee’s investigation, General Milley offered his own criticisms of President Trump. “You know, you’re the Commander-in-Chief,” he told the committee, “you’ve got an assault going on at the Capitol of the United States of America, and there’s nothing? No call? Nothing? Zero?”

Milley and McCarthy’s January 5 Memo

During his interview with the January 6 Committee, Milley explained that in preparation for January 6, the role of the D.C. National Guard was defined in a memorandum he described as “very strict on the use of the military.” Milley detailed how the memorandum prohibited the use of any riot control agents, stating, “We’re not doing it … and not only not doing it, you’re not going to have it. You’re not going to have the opportunity to use it.” Additionally, he mentioned that while such measures might be authorized under different circumstances on another day, they were explicitly forbidden “at that time, on this day.”

This directive was ultimately issued by Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy to Major General William Walker, commanding general of the D.C. National Guard, on January 5, 2021. Milley disclosed to the committee that he was actively involved in advising McCarthy on the memorandum, “line by line going through this, lining it out, editing, and stuff like that, resulting in this memo.”

The January 5 memo, carefully crafted by Milley and McCarthy, authorized 340 D.C. National Guard personnel to assist law enforcement with traffic control points and metro station support, and stationed 40 personnel at Joint Base Andrews to serve as the Guard’s Quick Reaction Force (QRF) in case of an emergency. However, this memo restricted General Walker from employing the QRF without explicit personal approval from Army Secretary McCarthy—a condition previously not imposed.

In March 2021, General Walker testified before the Senate Rules and Homeland Security Committee, stating that he had the authority to employ the Guard’s QRF before January 6 and described the new restrictions as “unusual.”

He also testified to the January 6 Committee about his inability to reach Secretary McCarthy on January 6, revealing that it was the first time he found the phone number he had for McCarthy to be out of service. Additionally, General Walker noted that Colonel Earl Matthews, who had McCarthy’s private number due to their social acquaintance, was also unable to reach him.

This breakdown in communication occurred just one day after McCarthy had issued the memorandum requiring General Walker to obtain explicit approval from him for employing the Guard’s QRF. What could possibly account for McCarthy’s unavailability during those critical hours? Did McCarthy somehow overlook the crucial role he had defined for himself with the new restrictions imposed just a day earlier?

Where’s McCarthy?

On January 6, Acting Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller approved the deployment of the D.C. National Guard by 3:04 p.m. The protocol then required Army Secretary McCarthy to convey this authorization to General Walker to enable the deployment of the D.C. National Guard. However, McCarthy never conveyed this authorization, resulting in the more than 3 hour delay.

The January 6 Committee’s final report states that after Defense Secretary Miller authorized the deployment at 3:04 p.m., Secretary McCarthy called General Walker, instructing him to “mobilize the entire Guard.” However, General Walker “categorically denies” receiving such a call. “Here’s the bottom line,” he said, “The Secretary was unavailable to me, and he never called me.”

It appears, however, that McCarthy changed his story after initially telling the committee that he had called General Walker. The committee’s final report addresses this inconsistency by detailing McCarthy’s actions and whereabouts on January 6 to explain the delay. It explains that starting around 3:00 p.m. on January 6—shortly after Defense Secretary Miller approved the Guard’s deployment at 3:04 p.m.—“25 minutes of Army Secretary McCarthy’s time was spent reassuring members of Congress that the Guard was indeed coming,” even though he had not yet conveyed the order to General Walker. The report continues, stating that by 3:45 p.m., McCarthy had completed his calls—none of which were to General Walker—and after picking up some items from his office, he headed to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) headquarters to draft a concept of operations, a process that took an additional 20 minutes.

However, when Brigadier General Aaron Dean, another Defense Department witness who testified before the House Oversight Committee, was asked whether he ever saw the plan McCarthy claims to have prepared, he responded, “Not only did I not see the plan, but he was also at the wrong agency.” He elaborated that the lead federal agency for this particular event was the United States Capitol Police, and questioned why McCarthy was at MPD headquarters instead of coordinating with Capitol Police, who were responsible for the security of the Capitol.

The January 6 Committee report also touches on this oversight, noting that no plan from Army leaders ever made it to the troops. “If they came up with a plan, they never shared it with us,” General Walker said, “I never saw a plan from the Department of Defense or the Department of the Army.”

The committee’s report further states that by 4:35 p.m., McCarthy was ready to authorize the deployment of the Guard, but “miscommunication” led to yet another half-hour delay. McCarthy told the committee that he tried to issue the “go” order through his subordinate, General LaNeve—a claim General Walker disputes, insisting the call never occurred. McCarthy rationalized not communicating directly by stating he was at the time drafting his talking points for a planned press conference with D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, explaining, “I wanted to get my thoughts collected.”

Authorization finally came at 5:09 p.m. during an ongoing video teleconference that had started at 2:30 p.m.. Defense Department witnesses present with General Walker on January 6 testified to the House Oversight Committee that General James McConville, Chief of Staff of the Army, mentioned during the conference that they had received authorization. Colonel Earl Matthews, who was present in the conference room next to General Walker, clarified that, “General McConville is not in the chain of command, so it wasn’t his order to give.” He added that General McConville was merely conveying that they were authorized to deploy. Matthews further specified that the actual authorization did not come from Secretary McCarthy but instead from Secretary Miller.

Who’s To Blame?

While the January 6 Committee admits that the delay in mobilizing the D.C. National Guard “seems unnecessary and unacceptable,” it attempts to rationalize and excuse McCarthy’s actions. The report suggests his preoccupation with making phone calls to members of Congress, gathering items from his office, crafting a supposed concept of operations that never reached the troops, and preparing remarks for a televised press conference as mitigating factors, justifying his absence from the day’s critical chain of command communications.

This communication breakdown, stemming from McCarthy, unfolded just one day after he, with General Milley’s input, issued the memorandum requiring General Walker to receive personal authorization from McCarthy to deploy the Guard. Despite these circumstances, the January 6 Committee concluded that the military’s processes that day were merely “imperfect” and found “no evidence that the delay was intentional.”

The January 6 Committee attributes the delay to “military processes, institutional caution, and a revised deployment approval process”—specifically, a process meticulously designed by Milley and McCarthy. Yet, the committee pins the blame on “Trump’s eagerness” to engage the U.S. military, alleging it compelled senior military leaders to take extreme “precautions” for the joint session. “Trump’s eagerness” must also have led McCarthy to remain completely unavailable to General Walker just one day after imposing restrictions that effectively stripped Walker of the authority to deploy the Guard without McCarthy’s explicit approval, thereby cementing the hours-long delay.

Never mind Milley’s explicitly stated mission to “fight” against the president “from the inside” and his intent to “plant flags”—intentions that appear to have materialized in the January 5 memo he meticulously outlined with McCarthy, directly undermining the D.C. National Guard’s ability to restore order that day.

Milley’s Insurrection

Milley’s perception of President Trump as a classic authoritarian leader, his willingness to entertain the possibility of Trump engaging in a “Reichstag moment,” and his fears of supposed “Trumpian Brown Shirts fomenting violence,” seems to have influenced his command decisions in the days and weeks leading up to the joint session. While Milley is entitled to his personal political prejudices, it raises the question of whether he lost sight of the fact these were, after all, just his own politically inspired opinions about the president. Did he believe his convictions were so righteous that they justified overstepping legal boundaries and authorizing actions that could be seen as undermining the president’s authority?

The chaotic events of January 6, exacerbated and prolonged by the National Guard’s delayed response, evidently served no benefit to Trump or his allies and instead significantly bolstered the objectives of his adversaries. It’s no wonder the January 6 Committee, which appears solely focused on preventing Trump from ever taking office again, shows little interest in highlighting that Milley, who swore an oath to obey the orders of the President of the United States, embarked on a mission to defy the former Commander-in-Chief, and ultimately seems to have sabotaged President Trump on that day.

Time For China To Turn On The Printing Press

Time For China To Turn On The Printing Press

By Andrew Zatlin of Southbay Research

Summary

  • Chinese money supply leads imports ~10 months
  • M1 Supply y/y growth weakest/sharpest drop in decades
  • Suggests 20% collapse in imports

Red Flag for Red China

The advantage of tracking container volumes is that we can bypass inflation and price distortions.

Simply put, on a container volume basis, Chinese imports are struggling: -7% y/y.  Container throughput has fallen 20% in the last 2 years.

The Chinese economic miracle is fading.  Unemployment is 5.3% in the cities and 17% among youth 17-24 years old (ex students).  Goldman, Citi, JP Morgan are all expecting growth of <5%.

The housing sector is the point of focus.  Housing asset values supported the consumer economy but prices have collapsed.  The latest month: -7% y/y.  The Chinese consumer won’t spend until housing prices stabilize. The housing bubble must be reinflated.

Meanwhile, China’s broadest monetary aggregate, M1, is falling at the fastest pace on record.

Deflationary Impulse

2025: a year of trade wars: Factories far and wide have excess capacity.  Chinese factories will export whatever they can at whatever price they can get.  We see that in commodities like steel, where prices are down 20% this year.

Sluggish exports to China are affecting other countries.  Expect tariffs and other forms of trade wars to break out but the lag in restrictions means a lot of deflation is coming to the US.

China Stimulus is Coming

The only cards China can play are monetary: move the yuan to 7.5+ and stimulate the housing market.  A Trump Presidency will fight the yuan devaluation and export initiatives.  A Harris Presidency won’t (they haven’t under Biden).  More deflation under Harris, less under Trump.

How to trade it: buy gold, buy crypto, buy anything the Chinese will use to evade the Chinese capital account firewall and coming currency devaluation.

Visualizing US Population Racial Breakdown Since 1990

The U.S. population has seen significant demographic shifts over the last few decades, with notable increases in non-white populations, particularly among Hispanics and Asians.

This graphic, via Visual Capitalist’s Bruno Venditti, breaks down the American population by race and/or ethnicity between 1990 and 2023.

The data comes from the Census Bureau and USAFacts as of August 2024.

Growth Among Non-White Populations

The nation’s non-white population has nearly doubled, growing from about 24.4% in 1990 to 41.6% in 2023. The majority of this growth came from the Hispanic population, which expanded from 23 million in 1990 to 65 million in 2023.

Meanwhile, the share of Black Americans rose modestly from 11.8% in 1990 to 12.6% in 2023.

More recently, the Asian or Pacific Islander population has become one of the nation’s fastest-growing racial and ethnic groups. Between 2000 and 2023, this group doubled its share of the U.S. population.

Population identifying as Other has also grown, from 1% to 3%. Generally speaking, this category is comprised of various Indigenous groups and people of two or more races.

Future Demographic Shifts

In 2023, 58% of the population identified as non-Hispanic white, 20% as Hispanic, 13% as Black, 6% as Asian or Pacific Islander, and 3% as Other.

Between 2016 and 2060, the non-Hispanic white population is projected to decline by around 19 million, dropping from 198 million to 179 million, despite the overall growth of the U.S. population.

Meanwhile, the percentage of Hispanic children is expected to grow from one-quarter to nearly one-third, with the share of Asian children also seeing a notable increase during this period.
