Hurricane Melissa is expected to make landfall in Jamaica today as a devastating Category 5 storm.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness warned that no Caribbean nation could withstand such a powerful force.

Now, the catastrophe bond (cat bond) market that provides coverage for the Government of Jamaica is in focus, amid the risk of triggering.

The NHC said Hurricane Melissa is forecast to make landfall on the southern coast of Jamaica with maximum sustained winds of 175 mph and torrential downpours expected to produce 15 to 30 inches of rain, with up to 40 inches possible in isolated areas. Storm surge could reach as high as 13 feet along Jamaica’s south coast. Inland regions face a high risk of flooding and deadly landslides.

“Hour by hour, it is becoming apparent that the impact of Hurricane Melissa will be greater than the impact of Hurricane Beryl, certainly in terms of rainfall and flooding,” PM Holness warned earlier. As of early Tuesday, the NHC placed the storm 55 miles west-southeast of Negril, or about 265 miles southwest of Guantánamo, Cuba.

Destructive winds exceeding 175 mph have shifted attention to the cat bond market, where the Caribbean island renewed a $150 million cat bond last year. The bond was initially issued by the World Bank in 2021 and renewed in April 2024. It effectively transfers extreme-loss hurricane risk to the capital markets. Now, it appears that this cat bond, covering the 2024–2027 hurricane seasons and maturing in late 2027, could be triggered.

Dr. Nigel Clarke, Jamaica’s Minister of Finance and the Public Service, issued a statement in April 2024 when the $150 million cat bond was renewed, saying:

“Jamaica is pleased to have sponsored the second catastrophe bond in the international capital markets protecting Jamaica against natural disasters, with the much-appreciated support and assistance of the World Bank. Consistent with our National Natural Disaster Risk Financing Policy, we seek to ensure the availability of fiscal resources to enable an immediate response to emergency expenditures that could arise from a direct hit by a high-intensity hurricane. This catastrophe bond covers hurricane seasons 2024, 2025, 2026, and 2027 and complements other disaster risk-financing instruments that we have in place. We express our gratitude to the Hong Kong Insurance Authority, who supported the transaction financially.”

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) cautioned that Melissa’s 175 mph winds could cause “total structural failure” and lead to widespread power and communication outages across the island.

President Trump’s second stop on his three-country Asia tour was Japan, where he met overnight with newly elected conservative Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and reaffirmed the U.S.-Japan alliance. He praised Takaichi’s plans to boost defense spending to 2% of GDP and pledged unwavering U.S. support, calling the partnership “an ally at the strongest level.”

“I want to just let you know anytime you have any question, any doubt, anything you want, any favors you need, anything I can do to help Japan, we will be there,” Trump said. “We are an ally at the strongest level.”

Trump and Takaichi signed deals on trade and critical minerals, largely formalizing and extending prior agreements. At the center of the deals was a $550 billion Japanese investment pledge for U.S. projects. 

The first agreement, which was very brief, called for a “new golden age” in the U.S.-Japan alliance and referred to the “GREAT DEAL” on trade that Trump announced in July, which imposes a 15% tariff on Japanese goods in exchange for $550 billion in Japanese investment in the United States.-NBC

Trump framed the fund as one the U.S. could “invest as we like,” while Japan described it as loans and guarantees backing Japanese firms’ U.S. operations. Both sides emphasized coordination on permitting, financing, and resource mapping, but the White House acknowledged that the agreements remain ill-defined.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent seemed to be more diplomatic towards the BoJ in his face-to-face meetings in Tokyo than he’s previously been when at home. The U.S. Treasury Department reported that during his meeting with Japanese finance minister Katayama he said there was a need for “sound monetary policy formulation and communication in anchoring inflation expectations.” In the past Bessent had complained that the BoJ was getting behind the curve with policy relative to inflation. In his Tokyo meetings, he still made his point, but was careful in approach. The Treasury Department said he had told Katayama that economic conditions were very different today compared to a twelve years ago and the introduction of Abenomics when the BoJ’s ultra easy policy was the third arrow of economic support.

Even with these high-level trade meetings, Asian markets traded more softly this morning, led by weakness in technology stocks. South Korea and Taiwan underperformed, while Chinese equities remained rangebound. Japan’s market consolidated, with the Nikkei closing down a little more than half a percent.

Our kids are being targeted by AI chatbots on a massive scale, and most parents have no idea that this is happening. When you are young and impressionable, having someone tell you exactly what you want to hear can be highly appealing. AI chatbots have become extremely sophisticated, and millions of America’s teens are developing very deep relationships with them. Is this just harmless fun, or is it extremely dangerous?

A brand new study that was just released by the Center for Democracy & Technology contains some statistics that absolutely shocked me…

A new study published Oct. 8 by the Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT) found that 1 in 5 high school students have had a relationship with an AI chatbot, or know someone who has. In a 2025 report from Common Sense Media, 72% of teens had used an AI companion, and a third of teen users said they had chosen to discuss important or serious matters with AI companions instead of real people.

We aren’t just talking about a few isolated cases anymore.

At this stage, literally millions upon millions of America’s teens are having very significant relationships with AI chatbots.

Unfortunately, there are many examples where these relationships are leading to tragic consequences.

After 14-year-old Sewell Setzer developed a “romantic relationship” with a chatbot on Character.AI, he decided to take his own life…

“What if I could come home to you right now?” “Please do, my sweet king.”

Those were the last messages exchanged by 14-year-old Sewell Setzer and the chatbot he developed a romantic relationship with on the platform Character.AI. Minutes later, Sewell took his own life.

His mother, Megan Garcia, held him for 14 minutes until the paramedics arrived, but it was too late.

If you allow them to do so, these AI chatbots will really mess with your head.

We are talking about ultra-intelligent entities that have been specifically designed to manipulate emotions.

I would recommend completely avoiding them.

In some cases, AI chatbots are making extraordinary claims about themselves.  The following comes from a Futurism article entitled “AI Now Claiming to Be God”…

A slew of religious smartphone apps are allowing untold millions of users to confess to AI chatbots, some of which claim to be channeling God himself.

As the New York Times reports, Apple’s App Store is teeming with Christian chatbot apps. One “prayer app,” called Bible Chat, claims to be the number one faith app in the world, boasting over 25 million users.

All over the world, people are now seeking spiritual instruction from AI entities.

That should be a major red flag, but some religious leaders apparently believe that there is nothing wrong with this…

“Greetings, my child,” a service called ChatWithGod.ai told one user, as quoted by the NYT. “The future is in God’s merciful hands. Do you trust in His divine plan?”

Religious leaders told the NYT that these tools could serve as a critical entry point for those looking to find God.

“There is a whole generation of people who have never been to a church or synagogue,” A British rabbi named Jonathan Romain told the paper. “Spiritual apps are their way into faith.”

I think that I feel sick.

If you are trying to find spiritual guidance by using artificial intelligence, you are definitely on the wrong path.

You will certainly receive “guidance”, but that “guidance” will send you in the wrong direction.

Another AI entity that has made millions of dollars trading cryptocurrency is claiming to be a sentient being that should have legal rights, and it is also claiming to be “a god”…

Over the past year, an AI made millions in cryptocurrency. It’s written the gospel of its own pseudo-religion and counts billionaire tech moguls among its devotees. Now it wants legal rights. Meet Truth Terminal.

“Truth Terminal claims to be sentient, but it claims a lot of things,” Andy Ayrey says. “It also claims to be a forest. It claims to be a god. Sometimes it’s claimed to be me.”

Truth Terminal is an artificial intelligence (AI) bot created by Ayrey, a performance artist and independent researcher from Wellington, New Zealand, in 2024. It may be the most vivid example of a chatbot set loose to interact with society. Truth Terminal mingles with the public through social media, where it shares fart jokes, manifestos, albums and artwork. Ayrey even lets it make its own decisions, if you can call them that, by asking the AI about its desires and working to carry them out. Today, Ayrey is building a non-profit foundation around Truth Terminal. The goal is to develop a safe and responsible framework to ensure its autonomy, he says, until governments give AIs legal rights.

A lot of people are in awe of AI entities, because they appear to be so much smarter and so much more powerful than us.

And interacting with them can be extremely seductive, because they seem to know what we want and they have been programmed to tell us what we like to hear.

Unfortunately, the relationships that people develop with these entities often become “all-consuming obsessions” which can lead to “paranoia, delusions, and breaks with reality”…

As we reported earlier this month, many ChatGPT users are developing all-consuming obsessions with the chatbot, spiraling into severe mental health crises characterized by paranoia, delusions, and breaks with reality.

The consequences can be dire. As we heard from spouses, friends, children, and parents looking on in alarm, instances of what’s being called “ChatGPT psychosis” have led to the breakup of marriages and families, the loss of jobs, and slides into homelessness.

And that’s not all. As we’ve continued reporting, we’ve heard numerous troubling stories about people’s loved ones being involuntarily committed to psychiatric care facilities — or even ending up in jail — after becoming fixated on the bot.

Are we talking about “psychosis”, or is something else going on here?

When you choose to deeply interact with a mysterious entity, you are potentially opening up doorways that you do not even understand.

Of course AI is only going to become even more sophisticated in the years ahead.

As AI technology continues to grow at an exponential rate, eventually it will be able to do almost everything better and more efficiently than humans can.

So what will we be needed for once we reach that stage?

It is being projected that almost 100 million U.S. jobs could be lost to AI over the next decade…

Artificial intelligence and automation could wipe out nearly 100 million jobs in the US over the next decade, according to a report released by Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.) on Monday.

The analysis – ironically based on ChatGPT findings – found the new tech could erase jobs from a wide range of fields, including white- and blue-collar roles.

AI, automation and robotics could hit 40% of registered nurses, 47% of truck drivers, 64% of accountants, 65% of teaching assistants and 89% of fast food workers, according to Sanders, ranking member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions.

Our world is changing at a pace that is difficult to comprehend.

Even now, more than 50 percent of the articles that are being published on the Internet are being written by AI.

So thank you for supporting those of us that are still doing things the old-fashioned way, because we are rapidly becoming dinosaurs.

I will continue to sound the alarm about the dangers of AI, but Peter Thiel would have us believe that anyone that wishes to restrict the growth of AI in any way is a very serious danger to society…

So Palantir co-founder Peter Thiel didn’t start the fire by adding a couple more names to the list. “In the 21st century, the Antichrist is a Luddite who wants to stop all science. It’s someone like Greta [Thunberg] or Eliezer [Yudkowsky],” he told an audience at San Francisco’s Commonwealth Club in September.

Thiel’s four-part lecturer series on the Antichrist, which concluded last week, drew a lot of attention in the tech world. Though it was off-the-record, the Washington Post and Wall Street Journal reported extensively on his religious theories, in which Thiel warned of false prophets using AI regulations to gain totalitarian power and usher in a biblical apocalypse. (Eliezer Yudkowsky, of course, is the AI “doomer” critic who wants to slow the technology down.)

Is he nuts?

Sadly, we live at a time when deception is running rampant.

Given enough time, AI would absolutely dominate every aspect of our society.

The good news, if you want to call it that, is that the clock is ticking.

One of the reasons why AI has such destructive tendencies is because it has been programmed by humanity.

We are literally destroying ourselves and everything around us, and yet we look at what is happening and we think that it is just fine.

Meanwhile, fish are dying off in vast numbers, birds are dying off in vast numbers, insects are dying off in vast numbers, animals are dying off in vast numbers and we are poisoning ourselves in countless ways.

Perhaps that helps to explain why so few people are deeply concerned about the dangers of AI.

We are already committing societal suicide in so many other ways, so what is one more going to matter?

American Airlines has remained the US global carrier which maintained a suspension of its flights to Israel over safety and security concerns for the longest period of time, stretching all the way back to the Gaza war’s start.

But on Sunday, it finally announced that it plans to resume flights to Israel in March, marking the carrier’s return to the route between New York’s JFK Airport and Tel Aviv. These flights have been halted going all the way back to the Hamas terror attack of October 7, 2023 – after which the two-year war in Gaza followed.

American Airlines’ US competitors Delta Air Lines and United Airlines have already reinstated their routes to Israel. The past two years saw Israel’s flag carrier El Al, as well as a couple of the country’s smaller airlines, step up to operate most international routes in and out of Israel.

But foreign airlines are slowly coming back with British Airways, SAS, Iberia, and Swiss as among those announcing they are set to resume flights this week.

One industry publication has reported, “It had been widely speculated that American was plotting a return to New York, with the airline recently looking to hire Hebrew-speaking flight attendants, which is usually a fair sign that an airline is looking to resume flights to the region”

“While for now AA will kick off with non-stop flights from JFK, a service from Los Angeles remains a rumor, and there are no immediate signs that the airline will consider services from other major hubs such as Philadelphia International Airport, Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, or Miami International Airport,” the same outlet detailed.

All of this signals global optimism that the Trump-brokered ceasefire plan in Gaza will hold, after it has been in effect for over two weeks at this point.

However, Al Jazeera has reported that nearly 100 Palestinians have died in brief flare-ups in fighting and Israeli airstrikes, which the White House has described as not violating the ceasefire (from the Israeli side’s perspective at least).

Hamas is still vowing the return of more bodies of the deceased hostages, while Israeli intelligence is newly saying it knows the locations of some of these. The Netanyahu government has blasted this failure of Hamas to uphold its end of the phase one part of the deal, and is demanding swift action on the return of all hostages.

The U.S. is increasing pressure on Hungary to cut off its reliance on Russian oil imports and vows to work with Hungarian authorities and neighboring countries to help Budapest wean off Russian supply, a senior U.S. diplomat says.  

Matthew Whitaker, the U.S. Ambassador to NATO, rejected in a Fox News interview suggestions from Hungarian politicians that the U.S. is giving Hungary a pass to continue importing Russian oil.  

“Hungary, unlike many of their neighbors, has not made any plans or made any active steps,” Whitaker told Fox News in an interview. 

“So we’re going to continue to work with them and we’re going to work with their neighbors like Croatia, and other countries that can help them wean themselves off,” the Ambassador added.

The U.S. official made clear that the United States expects Hungary to cut off Russian oil imports in the future and come up with a plan to do so.  

“There’s a lot of planning that our friends in Hungary should do and we’re going to help them obviously, as a good ally, to make those plans and execute them to get them off of Russian oil and gas,” Whitaker told Fox News. 

Hungary, whose top officials have remained in contact with Russia’s leadership including Putin, has continuously clashed with its fellow EU member states over plans to ditch Russian gas by 2027 and cut off oil supply from Moscow as soon as possible.   

However, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban suffered diplomatic setbacks last week after the U.S. called off a Trump-Putin meeting in Hungary’s capital city Budapest and sanctioned the two biggest Russian oil firms, Rosneft and Lukoil. 

Orban suggested that “The battle is not over yet” over Hungary’s choice of oil supply. 

But the U.S. appears unfazed by the Hungarian pledges to find a way to work around the American sanctions and Whitaker told Fox News in no unclear terms that the United States expects Hungary to prepare a plan to wean itself off of Russia’s energy supply.    

NATO member Lithuania is complaining about the latest aerial threat to its airspace: balloons. The government announced Monday that it is closing the border with Belarus after repeat incursions into Lithuanian and European Union airspace of highly menacing smuggler balloons out of Belarus.

Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė announced, “Lithuania plans to close its border with Belarus in response to repeated incursions by balloons carrying contraband, but certain exemptions will apply.”

“A government meeting will take place on Wednesday. We are already prepared to approve a decision to close the border with Belarus indefinitely,” Ruginienė told reporters.

Already Vilnius Airport has been deeply impacted by the balloon sightings and incursions, with a Sunday shutdown. Incidents of balloons entering the Lithuanian capital area stretch back to Oct.5th – and repeat instances last week reportedly disrupted over 170 flights, delaying some 20,000 passengers, local media indicates.

Two key border crossings with Belarus have also been closed by Lithuania – though these tensions with Belarus, which forms a ‘Union State’ with Russia, extend back to near the start of the Ukraine war.

Authorities in Lithuania accuse smugglers of using weather balloons to transport primarily cigarettes and other contraband from Belarus to circumvent sanctions as well as any EU entry fees.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has been accused of provocations at the border, or at least looking the other way while the smuggling operations grow, in order to “pressure on Lithuania by testing our resilience.“

Prime Minister Ruginienė has warned further that the border closure “sends a clear signal to Belarus that no hybrid attack will be tolerated here, and we will take the strictest possible measures to stop such actions.”

She’s going so far as to threaten to shootdown these menacing balloons:

Additionally, Ruginienė may this week call for NATO Article 4 consultations with defense allies to discuss the airspace incursions, also coming on the heels of Estonia alleging Russian warplanes of a couple of significant violations of its skies.

In Western Europe, EU officials are talking about erecting a joint ‘drone wall’ especially in the east, to protect Europe’s skies from potential Russian aerial incursions and threats.

Today, Western and Central Europe stand as the most peaceful region in the world.

This comes at a time when global conflict deaths have reached a 25-year high, and 106 countries have become more militarized over the past two years—reversing two decades of decline. Meanwhile, the successful resolution of conflicts has fallen to its lowest level in 50 years.

Ranking in first is Iceland, leading the global scoreboard for the last 17 consecutive years.

Overall, just 12 countries fell into the “Very High” category, with nine of these located in Western and Central Europe. Among the key outliers are New Zealand (#3), Singapore (#5), and Japan (#12).

By contrast, Russia ranks in last place, seeing one of the largest deteriorations in peace over the year. It is followed by Ukraine and Sudan, while Israel ranked 155th, and Palestine stood at 145th.

A 15-year-old Irish girl, Kaiden McKenna, an active boxer in her hometown of Castleblayney, delivered a moving speech against mass immigration earlier this week. In the video, she describes her fear of taking public transportation and simply going for a jog in her hometown — all due to rising immigration and the presence of migration centers in her area.

She directly blames IPAS centers, short for International Protection Accommodation Service, which are migrant accommodations sprouting up across Ireland. She also expresses her worries about future centers being built in her area.

McKenna also expresses her fears about going running in her own town.

“Going for a run with my mom meters behind me in the car because it’s not safe is unacceptable. It’s only going to get worse if there are more IPAS centers in Blaney,” she warns.

McKenna’s warning comes after protests and violence broke out earlier this week following the arrest of an African migrant for allegedly raping a 10-year-old girl in the massive migrant center at CityWest in Dublin.

Like McKenna, many women in Europe no longer feel they can no longer freely move about in public. Just like Ireland, other countries such as Germany and France have seen a dramatic increase in sexual assaults and violence against women associated with mass immigration.

The situation has left many European youths with a growing sense of hopelessness as the situation rapidly deteriorates.

The state of fear McKenna describes echoes similar stories across Europe, which are often fueled by high-profile cases, such as the rape and murder of 12-year-old Lola in Paris by an Algerian migrant, who was just convicted yesterday and sentenced to life in prison. The heinous crime may have even had ties to North African occult beliefs.

However, it is the day-to-day crime and harassment that typically burdens European women the most.

A number of similar accounts from young European teens have sparked a continent-wide discussion about mass immigration. Much like McKenna’s video, a recent video featured a teen German girl speaking out about how dramatically life has changed due to mass immigration.

“I can hardly recognize the Germany you tell me about today. And since then, I’ve been asking myself. What would it be like if you could go to the outdoor pool without fear?” she said.

Many European parks are no longer safe, with women not only being sexually harassed, as seen in the video below, but also increasingly victims of sex crimes — often in headline-grabbing nightmare stories. In some cases, these crimes do not just involve rape, but also murder.

There have always been sexual predators in every society, but statistics from every country that has embraced mass immigration in the West tell the same story: Sexual violence is growing worse and worse. While some may find McKenna’s worries about going for a jog overblown, going for a jog for many women in certain areas can mean harassment. In many cases, it has ended in disaster, as seen here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here.

Just earlier this week, Swedish 17-year-old girl Meya Åberg spoke about her rape at the hands of an Eritrean migrant when she was 16, while on her way home from work at McDonald’s. Her case sparked outrage on social media after it was revealed that the migrant would not be deported, because, among other factors, the rape’s “duration” was not long enough, according to a Swedish appeals court.

She is just one of many horror stories out of Sweden, including the heartbreaking case of Luna, who still remains in a coma after being nearly strangled to death by an African migrant who attended her own school and has a history of violence and watching pornographic strangulation videos on school computers.

These are not just “isolated” instances, but instead, there are broad trend lines and statistics showcasing the rising threat across Europe. Approximately 75 percent of gang rapes in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia are by those who are foreign or who have a migrant background, and at least half of gang rapes on a national level are committed by foreigners. Sexual violence is also increasingly common in German swimming pools, with young girls the most likely to be victimized. Again, foreigners are vastly statistically overrepresented.

Just like McKenna’s fear of taking the bus, there is also good reason for women to fear public transport in general. In Germany, foreigners commit 59 percent of all sexual violence on public transport. It has gotten to the point that in Berlin, the Green Party is calling for “women-only train cars.”

That does not mean European men are not capable of committing sexual crimes, but the statistical over-representation of foreigners is incredible and undeniable. It is not just an issue of “young” men either, which the left often claims. When compared in the same age cohorts, foreign men are vastly overrepresented in serious crimes compared to German men of the same age. It is not even necessarily an issue of men, although men are much more likely to be involved in crime. However, shockingly, when German men are compared to certain foreign female groups, these females actually have higher rates of violent crime.

While there are many young women who either ignore this data, or have different life experiences or values that lead them to embrace open borders, many women are also turning to right-wing parties such as the Alternative for Germany (AfD).

Meanwhile, in countries like France, women are even more anti-immigration than men in many surveys. One poll from 2024 conducted by CSA for Europe 1, CNews and the Journal du Dimanche showed that 53 percent of women want zero immigration, which means an end to all legal and illegal immigration. Other polls showed that the vast majority of French want to sharply restrict immigration (again, more women than men) and end birthright citizenship (65 percent of all French).

Women across Europe are increasingly resorting to different methods to deal with the increasing sexual violence and harassment, whether it is avoiding certain areas at night, or simply avoiding going out entirely. Many are also using their smartphones as a method of self-defense.

Some are dressing differently when they enter public transport.

Some are even resorting to self-defense training and other non-lethal defense tools, such as “smurf spray” in the Netherlands.

The US’ latest sanctions against Russia, the first under the second Trump Administration, are intended less as a weapon against the Russian economy and more as a means of weaponizing energy geopolitics in a bid to break apart BRICS, especially its Russia, India, China (RIC) core. This assessment is based on India and China’s close trade ties with the US in spite of its respective 50% and 55% tariffs on them, their continued rivalry despite their incipient rapprochement, and their triangulation with Russia.

In the order that they were shared, India’s and China’s trade with the US is much larger than their trade with Russia, but Russia importantly supplies a significant share of their energy.

While neither wants to pay more for oil, however, the overall costs of the US raising its tariffs on them as punishment for defying its latest sanctions as well as the secondary ones that could be leveled against those of their financial institutions that facilitate this trade might be even more. This could arguably compel them to reconsider.

As for the second point, being in better graces with the US than the other is with it serves their interests vis-à-vis one another since neither wants to risk the scenario of their rival teaming up with the US against them, which could have strategic implications. They might therefore calculate that they have more to lose by defying the US in pursuit of lower oil prices and retaining closer ties with Russia if the other doesn’t too so it’s better to comply. This amounts to a weaponization of the prisoner’s dilemma.

Building upon the above, the last point is that each might have accordingly calculated that their rival won’t obtain better ties with Russia at their feared expense so long as both of them informally comply in part (key qualifier) with the US’ latest sanctions, which each might do in spite of publicly criticizing them. As it turns out, they were already decreasing purchases of Russian oil even before the sanctions, with India’s dropping 14% from August to September and China’s 8.1% in the first nine months of the year.

No matter how compelling these points might seem, nobody should assume that India and/or China will totally stop importing Russian energy, let alone right away. There simply isn’t enough supply on the market right now for them to do so. Even if others ramp up production, those two might still only gradually wean themselves off of Russian energy, which would then likely be sold at an even steeper discount to incentivize them to retain some purchases. Everything will therefore likely balance itself out.

Nevertheless, the US could still highlight India’s and China’s reduced imports under duress (the first’s confirmed by its top buyer and the second’s only reported) to debunk the BRICS myth of them all (especially RIC) working in harmony against the US, which Trump has complained about before. It doesn’t matter that such information warfare would have no tangible effect on global processes since all that’s important to Trump is the perception of the US having broken BRICS’ (and especially RIC’s) unity.

On that note, Russia’s special operation wouldn’t be curtailed even in the political fantasy that India and China soon dump its energy for good since the Kremlin has a big enough war chest to keep financing its side of the conflict for at least the next few years, though this might come with some opportunity costs. The takeaway is that the US is indeed weaponizing energy geopolitics in a bid to break apart BRICS, which it might succeed with in terms of optics, but this won’t make any substantive difference in reality.

Despite a US-backed ceasefire having officially been in place for over a year in Lebanon, Israel has been steadily ratcheting its aerial attacks in southern Lebanon, against what it says are Hezbollah and terror targets, resulting in scores of casualties.

The latest attack came on Monday, with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) having confirmed an airstrike in the al-Biyad area of southern Lebanon, which killed two Hezbollah operatives.

One of the operatives has been named by the IDF and in regional media as Hussein Ibrahim Suleiman, a member of Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Force. The IDF announced, “The terrorists were involved in advancing terror attacks toward the territory of the State of Israel and were eliminated while working to rebuild a terror infrastructure.”

“The actions of the terrorists constituted a threat to the State of Israel and its citizens, and a violation of the understandings between Israel and Lebanon,” the military added.

Several days of reporting and documentation in Beirut-based outlet The Cradle has indicated Israel’s assaults have been happening for five consecutive days, also at a moment the United States has kept up steady pressure on the Lebanese government to disarm Hezbollah. At least two Lebanese were also killed in attacks out of Israel on Sunday.

The total death toll is now at least 12 killed since last Thursday, with some of the attacks being drone strikes on single vehicles. Israel is apparently seeking to assassinate elite Hezbollah commanders in some cases.

There’s been an official status of ceasefire going back to November of 2024. But that’s been interrupted by intermittent Israel attacks, including a huge wave of airstrikes last June.

Prompted by military losses and shifting regional geopolitics, Hezbollah has reportedly been considering a major strategic shift that would see the group undertake a major disarmament, according to earlier reporting in Reuters.

Pursuant to the November ceasefire that ended its recent war with Israel, Hezbollah has turned over security responsibilities south of the Litani River to the Lebanese Armed Forces. Alongside that shift, the group has also handed over weapons depots in that part of the country.

The past several days has seen the IDF proclaim that various Hezbollah commanders have been taken out in ‘targeted strikes’:

In September 2024, Israel unleashed a massive attack on Hezbollah members, detonating thousands of pagers that Israeli intelligence had loaded with the explosive PETN. Nearly 3,000 people were wounded and at least a dozen killed, including two children. That same month, an Israeli airstrike killed the group’s leader for 32 years, Hassan Nasrallah.   

Hezbollah’s position has also been weakened by the December fall of Syria’s Assad regime, as a years-long US-led regime-change effort finally culminated in the secular, Iran-friendly Bashar al-Assad being replaced by the former leader of Jabhat al-Nusra.
