Israel Declares War For First Time Since 1973 As Death Toll Exceeds 700; Americans Among Gaza Hostages

Update(1345ET): For the first time since the Yom Kippur War of 1973, the government of Israel has issued a formal and legal “declaration of war” after Saturday’s devastating assault from Islamic militants out of Gaza, which according to the country’s health ministry has left over 700 Israelis dead and thousands injured. Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer told CNN in a morning interview, “There will probably be more hundreds, several hundred more.”

At least 350 have been killed on the Palestinian side, as a large-scale Israeli bombing campaign over Gaza ensues. Israeli officials are expected to embark on some kind of hostage rescue operation. According to Israeli media there are foreigners, likely including Americans, among the kidnapped hostages being held by Hamas and Islamic Jihad:

The Government Press Office, a body that operates under the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office, said Sunday in a Facebook post that the number of hostages in Gaza was over 100.

Among the kidnapped were small children, the elderly, and foreign nationals including 11 Thais working on farms near the border. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the State Department was attempting to confirm reports that Americans had been killed or kidnapped.

Currently, there are reports that internecine gunfire has erupted in different parts of Israel and the West Bank. Overnight there were also reports of sporadic shelling and exchanges of fire in the north, between Hezbollah and Israel’s military.

Will a northern front open up? This would likely put Israel in an even greater state of panic as things spiral…

Below is a brief review of major events over the last several hours, courtesy of Academy SITREP:

  • Early this morning, Hamas militants launched a surprise attack on Israel firing thousands of rockets in a coordinated air and land assault.
  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that his country was now “at war” and has retaliated with massive airstrikes on Hamas targets.
  • Hezbollah, the Lebanese Shiite militia organization that fought a war with Israel in 2006, said that it was monitoring the situation but has not yet pledged its support to join forces with Hamas in this attack on Israel.
  • An adviser to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said that Iran supported the cross-border operation by Hamas, which is not surprising and could partially be in response to the ongoing Saudi Arabia /Israel diplomatic talks.
  • Netanyahu has spoken with President Biden and Secretary of Defense Austin said that “The Department of Defense will work to ensure that Israel has what it needs to defend itself and protect civilians from indiscriminate violence and terrorism.”
  • While still early, initial reports are coming in indicting over 40 Israelis have been killed along with hundreds more injured.

Among the most shocking images to come out of Saturday’s surprise deadly assault by Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) out of Gaza was the scene of dozens of militants flying over the southern Israeli desert using motor-powered hang gliders.

Some of the first footage to go viral soon after the broader cross-border assault was of militants parachuting down into a crowd of thousands of unsuspecting young Israeli partiers who were enjoying a rave concert in the southern desert. Foreigners, including Europeans and possibly Americans were also in attendance. The surreal scene looks like something out of the 1980s movie “Red Dawn”…

The above is being widely described as the moment it all started. The event was described as a “Music Festival for Peace” – ironically enough, but was very close to the Gaza border.

Possibly dozens of festival goers were abducted and others were killed. There were seen huddled in the back of large trucks and driven into Gaza by armed militants. 

Others, more fortunate, later fled across the desert by foot – and made it to their vehicles, as the below additional footage shows…

The whole paraglider aspect to the Hamas operation shows a high level of planning, coordination, and sophistication by the Gaza-based militant group. Many Western observers are questioning how Israel’s celebrated Mossad intelligence organization could have missed it, given clearly the operation was at least months or longer in planning.

Hamas subsequently published high quality footage of its ‘special ops’ units launching the motorized paragliders…

Later in the day, some of the captives – including apparently foreigners – were paraded by the Islamic terrorists in front of cameras. One particularly gruesome image included what looked like a young woman’s mangled, lifeless body face-down in the bed of a pick-up truck with a militant sitting on top of her (it’s as yet unknown whether she’s dead or alive).

There are reports that she may be a German national and her family is said to be seeking information on her whereabouts. She remains missing and is possibly deceased:

Americans were also likely among the captives. On Sunday Secretary of State Antony Blinken said, “We have reports that several Americans were killed. We are working overtime to verify that,” he told reporters. Here’s what the US top diplomat said:

“Does the administration know at this point if U.S. citizens were among the dead or those taken hostage?” NBC News’ Kristen Welker asked Blinken.

Blinken said: “So we have reports that several Americans may be among the dead. We are very actively working to verify those reports. Similarly, we’ve seen reports about hostages and they’re, again, we’re very actively trying to verify them, and nail that down.”

Pressed again on whether some U.S. citizens could have been taken hostage as well, Blinken replied: “That’s correct.”

Additionally Fox News correspondent Will Cain followed with, “Was just told by Israel’s Ambassador to the UN that there are dozens of American citizens among the hostages in Gaza.” He explained that many of these would be dual nationals. 

As more details emerge from the scene, there are unverified reports that multiple dozens of the festival attendees may have been killed or kidnapped – again among them international tourists and visitors.

The Irish Times on Sunday reported that 22-year-old dual citizen Kim Damti was among the many unaccounted for.

Ms Damti was attending an all-night outdoor rave with hundreds of others close to the Gaza border when the first rocket barrage hit close to 7am on Saturday, taking everyone by surprise.

In the last phone call made by Ms Damti, at 7am on Saturday, she was running with a friend towards a car in an attempt to flee the rocket barrage. That was the last contact with her.

More and more disturbing footage like the below has been trickling out.

US Sends Warships, Aircraft Carrier To Israel For Potential ‘Support’ Operations

NBC’s Pentagon correspondent is reporting that the US military is dispatching navy warships as well as an aircraft carrier to waters off Israeli as part of “support” operations.

“The US military is planning to move US Navy ships and US military aircraft closer to Israel as a show of support, according to two U.S. officials familiar with the planning,” NBC’s Courtney Kube writes. “Movements could start immediately but all the assets will not be in place for several days.”

Scenes at Israel’s Ben Gurion  international airport have shown long lines of frantic Israelis, as well as tourists, seeking to exit the country amid fears of broader war and escalation following the major Saturday attack from Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants in Gaza.

Likely the coming days will see an exodus of tens of thousands of tourists as well as foreign nationals who reside in Israel. Dual Israeli nationals with places to stay abroad will also likely be seeking to get out.

NBC notes further that non-essential personnel may be leaving the US embassy in Jerusalem: 

The U.S. is also working through plans for a possible non-combatant evacuation — helping Americans get out of Israel. Nothing has been decided or ordered but they are working through options, including one that involves putting some Americans on the Navy ships to get them to safety.

While President Biden on Saturday pledged full support to PM Netanyahu as Israel embarks on a fresh Gaza war, which could be the biggest in decades, there remains the potential for direct US military involvement if things spiral out of control. 

After all, Americans are being reported among the dead and kidnapped (likely many who dual US-Israeli citizens) after the devasting Hamas raid into southern Israel. In some pockets, fighting may be ongoing.

Currently, the Israeli Defense Forces are heavily bombarding Gaza City in what’s only the beginning of more strikes to come, and possibly a ground incursion to rescue hostages.

At least two Israelis and one Egyptian have been killed after a man opened fire at Israeli tourists in the Egyptian city of Alexandria on Sunday, according to the country’s interior ministry.

Israeli and Arabic media reported that a policeman had targeted Israeli tourists at the site of Pompey’s Pillar in the city. The Israeli foreign ministry confirmed the deaths in a statement, adding that a third Israeli was wounded and is in moderate condition.

“This morning during a visit of Israeli tourists in Alexandria, Egypt, a local opened fire at them, murdering two Israeli citizens and their Egyptian guide,” it said. 

Footage shared on social media showed two people lying motionless on the ground, one person wounded and police officers inspecting the site.

Egyptian media said the attacker was detained. Extra News, an Egyptian television affiliated with the state, quoted an unidentified source as saying that the policeman had fired “at random using his personal weapon”.

Meanwhile, an Egyptian source told Reuters that the attacker reportedly lost control after being provoked and fired randomly on the tourist group.

The incident came a day after Palestinian resistance groups in the Gaza Strip launched a massive air, land and sea attack on Israel in the early morning.

Israel has vowed “mighty vengeance”, and air strikes have pounded the besieged enclave since.

At least 313 Palestinians in Gaza and 350 Israelis have been killed, and hundreds wounded on both sides. Seven Palestinians in the occupied West Bank have also been killed.

Following this weekend’s attack on Israel by Hamas, the Democratic Socialists of America have planned a march in New York City in “solidarity with the Palestinian people and their right to resist 75 years of occupation and apartheid.”

The 1PM ET rally, “All Out for Palestine,” comes after national backlash over the Hamas attack.

NYC DSA posted the following on Saturday in response to the attack:

DSA is steadfast in expressing our solidarity with Palestine.

Today’s events are a direct result of Israel’s apartheid regime—a regime that receives billions in funding from the United States.

End the violence. End the Occupation. Free Palestine.

Continued:

We unequivocally condemn the killing of all civilians. It is imperative for international human rights law to be respected.

But we cannot forget that the Israeli state has systematically denied Palestinians the right to self-determination for decades.

This was not unprovoked.

For over 60 years, Palestinians have faced ethnic cleansing, torture, bombings, and housing demolitions. Gaza is still under a blockade.

As socialists, we must act.

Congressman Ritchie Torres hit back, posting on X: “Never mind the hundreds of Israeli civilians and children who have been murdered, wounded, abducted, and terrorized. Their lives mean nothing to the DSA. Nothing,”adding “The NYC-DSA is revealing itself for what it truly is: an antisemitic stain on the soul of America’s largest city,” Torres continued.

Torres continued: “There is a special place in hell for those who glorify the cold-blooded murder of civilians and children.”

DSA includes members like Ilhan Omar, Cori Bush, Rashida Tlaib, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Jamaal “Fire Alarm” Bowman.

Democratic Reps. Cori Bush of Missouri, Jamaal Bowman of New York, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Ilhan Omar of Minnesota all released statements calling for de-escalation in the wake of one of the largest single-day attacks against Israel in its history. 

All the statements called for – “an immediate ceasefire and de-escalation” – almost as if they were coordinated responses (almost…)

Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, a Palestinian-American who called Israel an apartheid state as recently as June, has not yet issued any statement on the attacks against Israel, which reports suggest may also have resulted in the murder or abduction of Americans.

This radical leftist party has lectured everyone under the sun about “extremism” in America, even calling people they disagree with, such as Republicans, “Nazis.”

And finally, of course, where is the Anti-Defamation League in all this? Isn’t this the ultimate anti-semitic action – and Elon Musk and Trump and Deplorabes had nothing to do with it?

The founder of the largest hedge fund in the world didn’t mince words when he was interviewed on the topic of the treasury market this week.

What is driving us towards this “debt crisis” is a rapid rise in government debt driven by an unusually large fiscal deficit.

At the same time, interest rates on all of that debt are also rising rapidly as major buyers have stepped back from the market.

As many emerging market economies are well aware, rapidly growing debt paired with rapidly rising interest rates is a recipe for a debt crisis.

At some point, the Fed may need to step in and intervene in the treasury market but that likely wouldn’t come without serious consequences for inflation.

Brian Riedl recently wrote an important piece explaining the dynamics driving a potential “debt crisis.”

Investors might like to think this matters only to the bond market but the historical relationship with stock valuations would suggest otherwise.

There are more “corporate zombies” in the markets today than ever before, especially within the small cap space.

While the broad stock market may not show it, these stocks are already beginning to price in the damaging effects of a rapidly rising cost of capital.

And such relative weakness in the most interest-rate sensitive segments of the stock market has been an effective warning signal for the broader market in the past…

Germany: Fresh Call To Ban AfD Comes From CDU Politician

While the left is well known for calling for a ban on the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), often described as a conservative party, also has a variety of politicians calling for the party to be banned.

This time, CDU MP Marco Wanderwitz, who was personally defeated by an AfD candidate, plans to introduce a motion in the Bundestag to ban the party.

Wanderwitz made the call to ban the party during the state-run ARD television program “Panorama,” saying, “We are dealing with a party that seriously endangers our free democratic basic order and the state as a whole,” which is why “it is high time to ban them.”

Wanderwitz says he is searching out other MPs to back his vote; however, the ultimate authority on whether such a ban is possible is the German Constitutional Court. Not only are the legal hurdles for such a ban very high, but the political implications of banning the AfD would be enormous.

The AfD is the second most popular party in the country, and currently sits at 21 percent in Politico’s poll of polls, only behind the CDU. However, some polls have placed it as high as 23 percent, indicating that nearly one out of four German voters in the country could back the party. Approximately 30 percent of German voters say they could imagine voting for the party.

In the event of a ban, the AfD could still appeal the process at the European Court of Justice (ECJ).

Wanderwitz is particularly irked by the fact that the AfD has any money at all, saying during his ARD interview that if there was a ban, then “all these people who can now be right-wing extremists, paid with tax money, 24 hours a day would have to look for another job the next day.”

Notably, Wanderwitz lost his constituency to AfD deputy Mike Moncsek. The only reason Wandertwitz has a job in politics still is due to the party system in Germany, with the CDU placing him on their list of candidates, which helped him gain re-entry into the Bundestag.

Besides Wanderwitz’s own personal fortunes, the CDU party also sees the AfD as its main democratic competitor to its right, giving the party ample motive to want to see a ban.

Wanderwitz said he fears the AfD’s growing strength: “The radical right-wing movement was very fragmented for many years. But the unifying, warming campfire of the AfD is now so dominant that almost everything that exists in this political spectrum is tied together.”

Wanderwitz, however, may not represent the current mainstream opinion within his party. So far, the head of the CDU, Friedrich Merz, does not back a ban of the AfD.

“Party bans have never led to solving a political problem,” he said in a ZDF summer interview earlier this year. Nevertheless, he has vowed to never work with the party.

Regional elections are set to take place in Hesse and Bavaria on Oct. 8, with the AfD expected to outperform.

War As An ‘Investment’: The Bizarre Business-Speak Of Mass Killing

Did you know the Russia-Ukraine War is a great “investment” for the United States? A terrific opportunity to kill lots of Russians and to destroy lots of their military equipment at a relatively cheap cost to us? (Just don’t mention the price paid by Ukraine.) It gives new meaning to the expression “making a killing” on the “market.”

To Gordon Gekko’s infamous “greed is good” speech we must now add “war is good.” That war is “right.” That it “works” – at least for America, allegedly.

War as an “investment” truly symbolizes the moral bankruptcy of conventional discourse in the U.S. political mainstream.

Instead of war being a calamity, a catastrophe, a realm of death and destruction, dare I say even a mortal sin of grievous evil, we’re told that instead it’s an investment that’s paying dividends, especially in that growth stock known as Ukraine.

Even body counts and truck counts from the Vietnam War era are being brought back to show what a great “investment” the Ukraine War has been for the U.S.

In her latest, Caitlin Johnstone cites war-lover Max Boot for his advocacy of the Russia-Ukraine War as a continuing investment opportunity for the U.S., including the use of body and truck counts as a measure of progress:

“Russia has lost an estimated 120,000 soldiers and 170,000 to 180,000 have been injured,” [Max] Boot writes [in a Washington Post op-ed]. “Russia has also lost an estimated 2,329 tanks, 2,817 infantry fighting vehicles, 2,868 trucks and jeeps, 354 armored personnel carriers, 538 self-propelled artillery vehicles, 310 towed artillery pieces, 92 fixed-wing aircraft and 106 helicopters.”

CNN has recently made a similar argument…

“The Russian armed forces have been devastated, thereby reducing the risk to front-line NATO states such as Poland and the Baltic republics that the United States is treaty-bound to protect,” Boot continues. “And all of that has been accomplished without having to put a single U.S. soldier at risk on the front lines.”

“That’s an incredible investment,” gloats Boot…

Raspail’s Dystopian “The Camp Of The Saints” Novel Warning Of Immigration Influx Has Been Realized 50 Years Later

Fifty years ago, in 1973, the French author Jean Raspail released a then seemingly far-fetched novel titled “The Camp of the Saints,” which portrayed a massive influx of immigrants to France and Europe. Now, on the 50th anniversary of the book’s publication, the narrative feels eerily prescient as countries like Italy and Poland grapple with real immigration pressures.

The powerhouse countries of Germany and France tend to set the agenda on the immigration issue, while countries like Poland and Italy find themselves responding to events rather than shaping them.

Recent weeks have seen this topic heat up, especially in Italy, where the island of Lampedusa has become a flashpoint. The island is inundated with migrants arriving in large numbers on boats from the African mainland.

Meanwhile, a film titled “Green Border” has stirred controversy in Poland, by portraying its border guards as ruthless enforcers for a quasi-fascistic government.

I would recommend all viewers so enamored with Agnieszka Holland’s “work” to at least go to Naples. Get off the train arriving at Napoli Centrale and walk a bit towards the Forcella district, among the stalls, streets, and alleys filled with African and Middle Eastern migrants. I would also suggest traveling to an Italian city, town, or district with a significant immigrant population and letting your daughter take a dog for a walk in the evening. After all, it’s normal for a child to be able to go out in the evening with a dog for a stroll in the city park, right?

The same in Rome. I recommend choosing a hotel near Stazione Termini and walking back in the evening around the station or, say, near Piazza Porta Maggiore. Just as a tourist. And only then, comment on the topic of immigration.

Italy’s struggles with immigration have been compounded by external challenges and international politics. The images from Lampedusa, such as crowded boats or migrants scaling fences, have alarmed many across Europe. A survey reported by the Italian La Stampa found that six out of ten Italians believe their government’s response is inadequate and 75 percent are concerned about the landings on Lampedusa.

Internally, the Italian government faces divisions. Supporters of former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Matteo Salvini have criticized Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for the current state of affairs, noting that during Salvini’s tenure, migrant landings had been curtailed. Recent investigations have revealed the involvement of certain NGOs in human trafficking, a charge that Salvini had made earlier, leading to legal repercussions for him.

During Salvini’s time, the newspaper Corriere della Sera revealed the truth about immigrants. An undercover police officer spent some time on one of the ships owned by German NGOs and saw for himself that there was significant human trafficking taking place, and the criminals involved in paid smuggling collaborated with the “helping” activists. Rafts approached the ships, and activists took people from the traffickers

The broader European immigration policy, particularly Germany’s open-door approach, has only amplified the influx of African migrants to Europe.

Jean Raspail’s “The Camp of the Saints” is chilling not only for its predictive narrative but also because it suggests a certain inevitability to the unfolding events.

The story centers on France’s paralysis in the face of an impending crisis, a narrative that, for many, seems to be playing out in real-time across Europe. Despite constant warnings through the media, the French remain passive and ill-prepared. When action is finally taken, it’s too late. The army, influenced by leftist ideals, is depicted as weak and indecisive.

The French government’s response is delayed, leaving citizens defenseless. Instead of preparing, they naively hope for friendly immigrants seeking a “better life.” However, the reality turns into horror when the ships arrive.

FIFA announced this week it had agreed that the sole candidacy to host the 2030 World Cup would be the combined bid of Spain, Portugal and Morocco.

In addition, in view of the centenary of the first World Cup, held in Uruguay in 1930, there will also be a ceremony in the country’s capital Montevideo, as well as three opening matches being played in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay.

The 2030 World Cup will therefore have an unprecedented format, as it will be held in six countries and on three continents (Africa, Europe and South America). Until now, the World Cup has never been held in more than two countries or on different continents. In 2002, South Korea and Japan held it jointly, while in 2026 it will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Despite FIFA president Gianni Infantino hailing how “In a divided world, FIFA and football are coming together,” the plans have come in for some initial harsh criticism – mainly for the effect the geographical spread will have on the tournament’s carbon footprint.

Knife Attacks At German Train Stations Have More Than Dubled Since 2019

The number of knife attacks recorded at train stations in Germany has more than doubled since 2019, and foreign nationals are greatly overrepresented when analyzing the ethnicity of suspects.

By Aug. 31 this year, the German Federal Police had already recorded 527 violent crimes in which a knife had been used at German train stations — the equivalent of more than two knife attacks a day on average.

The figures were provided by the federal government following a request by Martin Hess, an MP for the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

In the latest data available, 788 knife-related crimes had been reported so far this year — an increase of almost 40 percent over last year, and double the last comparable pre-lockdown year of 2019.

Of the 788 offenses recorded this year, the federal police arrested 589 suspects of which 209 were foreign nationals. This means that 35 percent of suspects in knife-related crimes at German train stations are foreign, despite foreign nationals comprising 16 percent of the total population.

The most common nationalities of foreign suspects were Syrians, Poles, Moroccans, and Turks.

In addition to the concerning rise in knife-related attacks in the vicinity of public transport, Germany has experienced a spate of violent attacks in general at train stations in which, again, foreign national suspects are greatly overrepresented.

One modus operandi appears to be the pushing of victims onto the train tracks, to which 49 people were subjected in 2021, up from the 29 cases recorded in the previous year.

German news outlet Deutsche Welle reported last year that 38 of the 65 known suspects involved in such attacks in recent years were not German nationals, showing a disproportionate correlation with migrant crime.

A similar story is unfolding in neighboring France, where annual figures released by the stats bureau of the French Ministry of the Interior last month showed that 69 percent of violent robberies and sexual assaults on public transport in the Parisian region of Île-de-France were perpetrated by foreign nationals.
